Chapter 2: The Hidden Microphone

The recording was undeniably crisp. It held the ambient clatter of porcelain cups, the low hum of an espresso machine, and the sharp, recognizable voice of Kayla from three nights prior.
*""...I don't care what the lab logs say, Richard. Maya can't walk across that stage. If she receives the patent credit for the biosensor polymer, the board will bypass my startup completely. You control the department grant allocations—tell the provost her thesis citations are plagiarized.""*
A heavy pause hung over the speakers. Then came Richard’s voice, low, calculating, and cold.
*""The university review board requires a paper trail, Kayla. I already altered the timestamps on the shared laboratory drive to make it look like your thesis draft was submitted three months before hers. All you have to do is stand up during the award announcement and demand an inquiry. The board will suspend her diploma pending an investigation, and our venture capital round closes on Tuesday.""*
*""And what if she fights back?""* Kayla’s voice laughed, shrill and confident. *""With what money? She’s an orphan living on a teaching assistant stipend. She won't even afford a consultation with an attorney.""*
The recording clicked off.
The silence that followed was not merely quiet; it was suffocating.
In the second row, professors exchanged appalled, furious glances. Several student council representatives stood up in disgust.
In the front row, Richard turned a sickening shade of grey, staring at his shoes as if hoping the floorboards would open and swallow him whole. Kayla gasped, clutching her throat, her eyes darting toward the exits, only to find two campus security officers already standing quietly at the end of the aisle.
Maya did not look at them. She looked at Dean Vance.
""Maya Lin,"" Dean Vance said softly, his voice softening with profound respect. ""Your research into biodegradable molecular sensors has already been independently verified by the National Institute of Science. Your patent belongs to you, and your degree has been awarded with the highest honors of this institution.""
The Dean extended both hands, presenting the royal blue leather diploma binder.
Maya stepped forward, accepted the binder with a deep, respectful nod, and turned to face the crowd.
May you like
The auditorium erupted into a thunderous standing ovation.
