The call was from Julian Sterling—a billionaire pharmaceutical executive whose company held a near-monopoly on municipal filtration membranes across North America.
The following afternoon, Sterling arrived at the institute in a tailored three-piece suit, carrying a bespoke leather briefcase and accompanied by two senior corporate litigators.
He sat in the conference room, looking around the modest space with a polished, calculated smile.
""Dr. Lin,"" Sterling began, sliding a leather folder across the table. ""Our board has reviewed your cellulose filter data. It is remarkable work. We are prepared to acquire the exclusive commercial rights to the patent for forty million dollars.""
Maya did not touch the folder. ""The patent is not for sale, Mr. Sterling.""
Sterling chuckled softly, leaning back in his leather chair. ""Dr. Lin, please. Let's be realistic. You are a young researcher at a non-profit foundation. You don't have the manufacturing infrastructure, the lobbying power, or the global supply chains to scale this technology. If you partner with Sterling BioCorp, you will be set for life, and we will ensure the product enters the market within three years.""
""At what retail price?"" Maya asked calmly.
Sterling’s attorney spoke up. ""Our financial modeling suggests a baseline consumer unit price of forty-five dollars per replacement cartridge, ensuring a sustainable profit margin.""
""Forty-five dollars is the monthly food budget for a family in the communities this filter was designed to protect,"" Maya said evenly.
