Chapter 5: The Eviction of Illusions

Two weeks later, the morning sun broke over the wealthy residential suburb of Oakmont.

Outside the modern glass-and-stone residence that Richard had purchased using Evelyn’s life insurance proceeds, a bright yellow moving truck sat parked on the driveway.

Maya stood on the sidewalk, accompanied by Elena Gomez, a civil litigation attorney, and a county sheriff’s deputy.

Richard sat on the stone steps of the porch, wearing a wrinkled golf shirt and slacks, looking twenty years older. The university had fired him within forty-eight hours of the commencement recording; his bank accounts had been frozen pending a federal audit of redirected grant money, and his venture capital partners had filed civil lawsuits for fraud.

Kayla stood by the open garage, throwing cardboard boxes into the back of an old hatchback, her face stained with streaks of cheap mascara.

When Kayla saw Maya approach, she stopped, dropping a box of designer shoes onto the concrete.

""Are you happy now, Maya?"" Kayla yelled, her voice hoarse from crying. ""You ruined my life! You took my company, my reputation, my home!""

Maya stopped at the base of the driveway. She looked at Kayla not with malice, but with the calm detachment of a doctor examining a wound that had long since healed.

""I didn't take anything from you, Kayla,"" Maya said quietly. ""You built your entire identity on stolen work and borrowed money. You convinced yourself that if you acted like a genius, you wouldn't need to do the labor. The only thing that was destroyed was a lie.""

Richard looked up from the steps, his hands shaking. ""Maya... your mother wouldn't want us out on the street.""

""My mother left this house in trust for my education and public medical research, Richard,"" Maya replied, holding up the probate court's final restitution order. ""You forged the executor signature while her body was still in the morgue. You didn't just steal money; you tried to erase her memory.""

Maya turned to the sheriff’s deputy, handed him the certified eviction order, and walked back to her car.
