Chapter 9 - The Morse Code in the Dark

The rhythmic tapping against the interior deadbolt of the children's bedroom echoed through the smoke-tinged hallway like a series of tiny gunshots. Dot-dot-dash, dot-dot-dash—SOS, repeated with mechanical precision and frantic urgency. Julian didn't wait for Clara to finish her sentence. He broke into an immediate, explosive sprint down the corridor, his long strides eating up the distance in seconds, leaving Clara slumped on the staircase landing like a broken porcelain doll.

Julian reached the white wooden door of the children's room and threw his weight against it, but the heavy interior deadbolt held firm against his shoulder. Someone on the other side had jammed a steel wedge into the doorframe, effectively locking the children in while simultaneously trapping any potential rescuers outside.

"Leo! Maya! Back away from the door!" Julian shouted, his voice cracking with a raw panic he hadn't felt in his entire corporate career.

"Dad! The window! Someone's outside the window!" Leo’s terrified voice shrieked from within the dark room, muffled by the solid oak panels.

Julian dropped to his knees, ignoring the expensive wool fabric of his trousers scuffing against the floor, and swung his elbow violently against the lower hinge of the door. With a deafening crack of splintering pine, the hinge sheared off. He hooked his fingers into the widening gap and threw all his weight backward, ripping the door entirely off its frame and sending it crashing onto the bedroom floor.

The room was bathed in the harsh, flashing crimson and amber strobe lights of an emergency vehicle parked down on the street below—though neither Julian nor Clara had called the police. Two figures in civilian clothes were scrambling out the second-story casement window onto the exterior roof ledge, dragging a small, struggling figure between them.

Maya was wrapped tightly in a thick wool blanket, her dark hair blowing wildly in the chill night wind as one of the intruders hoisted her over his shoulder. Leo stood frozen by the edge of the unmade bed, clutching his small device to his chest like a shield, tears streaming down his face as he pointed a trembling finger toward the open window.

Julian didn't hesitate. He lunged across the bedroom, diving headfirst through the open casement window onto the slick, rain-slicked slate roof tiles just as the intruders began lowering Maya down a heavy nylon rope tied securely to the chimney stack below.

The cold night air hit Julian like a physical blow, but adrenaline kept him moving with lethal focus as he slid down the sloping roof toward the edge, his leather-soled shoes finding precarious traction on the wet slate.
