Chapter 7 - The Interrogation in the Dark

The heavy silence in the second-floor hallway was so thick it felt tangible. The intruder stood frozen six feet away from Julian, clad entirely in matte-black tactical gear with all identifying insignia stripped away. In his left hand, he held Clara’s heavy leather suitcase; in his right, he casually twirled the historic brass key that had unlocked the hidden wall safe. A faint red LED light blinked rhythmically on the man’s tactical vest, signaling an active recording device broadcasting every second of the encounter to an unknown remote command center.
Julian didn't flinch, nor did he adopt an aggressive fighting stance. He simply stood tall, his dark suit blending into the obsidian shadows, his gaze locked directly onto the masked man's eyes behind a tinted tactical visor.
"Put the bag down," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm, carrying an authority that made the temperature in the corridor seem to drop several degrees.
The intruder let out a low, gravelly chuckle that rattled in his throat. "You think you’re in control here, Mr. Vance, just because you built a nice little software company and bought a suburban fortress? Your wife invited the wolf inside the pen long before you ever unlocked this front door."
From inside the darkened master bedroom behind the intruder, Clara stumbled out, her dark silk robe disheveled, her hair wildly out of place, and her cheeks stained with genuine, unscripted tears. She wasn't acting anymore; the veneer of sophisticated control had been utterly shattered by the brutal reality of the men she had been dealing with behind Julian’s back.
"Julian... don't let them take the drive," Clara choked out, her voice trembling violently as she clutched the doorframe for physical support. "They... they said they would clear my name, but they lied. They want everything—the house, the company, the children's trusts."
The tactical operative turned his head slightly toward Clara, his visor reflecting the pale moonlight. "Shut your mouth, Clara. You signed the contract under your own free will. The debt your father left behind doesn't vanish just because you married a tech millionaire."
Julian’s eyes narrowed sharply. "Her father died ten years ago, free of debt."
"That's what the public probate records say," the operative replied smoothly, stepping forward a few inches while shifting his grip on the suitcase. "But private ledgers kept in offshore vaults tell a very different story. A story involving stolen government patents, corporate espionage, and a partnership that your dear wife inherited when she took over the family estate."

Before Julian could process the staggering implication, the operative suddenly tossed the heavy leather suitcase directly at Julian’s chest as a diversion, dropping a smoke grenade onto the hardwood floor between them with a sharp metallic clatter.
