Chapter 4 - The Midnight Subpoena

The heavy grandfather clock in the downstairs study chimed midnight, its deep, resonant gongs vibrating through the floorboards of the sprawling suburban home. Julian sat in the leather armchair by the window, the blue glow of his laptop screen casting long, sharp shadows across his face. The children were finally asleep upstairs, exhausted from the emotional turbulence of the afternoon, their bedroom door secured with a heavy interior deadbolt that Julian had personally installed. The dark suit jacket hung neatly over the back of the chair, leaving Julian in his shirtsleeves as he combed meticulously through years of financial records, emails, and home automation logs.

A sharp, authoritative knock at the front door cut through the silence of the midnight hour.

Julian didn't flinch. He had been expecting it. He stood up smoothly, walking down the darkened hallway with steady, measured footsteps. When he pulled the white door open, two figures stood on the porch under the amber porch light, clad in the sharp uniforms of local process servers, holding a thick manila envelope stamped with the seal of the county family court.

"Julian Vance?" the taller officer asked, his voice flat and professional.

"I am," Julian replied, his voice calm, steady, and entirely devoid of surprise.

The officer handed over the heavy envelope. "You’ve been served with an emergency restraining order and a petition for exclusive occupancy of the residence, filed by Clara Vance. You are required to vacate the premises within twelve hours."

Julian accepted the papers without a word of protest, his eyes scanning the legal heading with practiced clinical detachment. The paperwork was immaculate, citing a sudden, fabricated history of domestic instability and emotional volatility—backed up, of course, by the carefully curated video clips Clara had extracted from their home’s proprietary security network, edited specifically to paint Julian as a menace to his own children.

"Thank you," Julian said quietly, and closed the door before the bewildered officers could offer their standard procedural warnings.

He walked back into the study, tossing the manila envelope onto the mahogany desk right beside his smartphone. The phone screen blinked instantly, illuminating a new notification from an encrypted remote server that Julian had secretly routed through his office’s corporate firewall three days ago.

The notification wasn't a text or an email. It was a live telemetry report tracking data export activity originating from the exact IP address of Clara’s personal tablet upstairs. She wasn't just trying to legally evict him from the house; she was actively transferring a massive digital portfolio of proprietary financial assets belonging to Julian’s engineering firm to an offshore account registered under her maiden name.

Julian picked up his phone, tapped the screen twice to initiate a counter-protocol, and watched as a second hidden camera feed—one Clara didn't even know existed—flashed onto the display.
