Chapter 2 - The Echoes in the Corridor

Julian’s breath hitched in his throat as the small device in Leo’s hand flickered, casting a pale, cold luminescence across the boy's tear-stained face. The audio loop playing from the miniature recorder wasn’t just a simple snippet of shouting; it was a continuous, harrowing catalog of cold manipulation and psychological cruelty that Clara had inflicted upon the children while Julian was away at the office. The beige satin blouse Clara wore suddenly seemed less like professional attire and more like a carefully chosen costume for a performance that had just completely collapsed.
"Where did you get that?" Julian asked, his voice dropping an octave, turning into a terrifying whisper that silenced the entire hallway instantly.
Leo didn't answer verbally. Instead, he simply pointed a trembling finger toward the high molding near the front foyer, right above the framed family portrait. Tucked neatly behind the decorative woodwork was a second, identical monitoring device, blinking with a tiny, rhythmic red LED light. Clara’s face drained of all color, her lips parting in a silent gasp as she realized the very surveillance system she had installed to control the narrative of the household had just been turned completely against her by her own children.
"You thought you were the only one watching, Julian," Clara hissed, her voice losing its previous desperate edge, replaced by a venomous chill that shocked the young children. "You think your little corporate security cameras are the only eyes in this house? You have no idea what it takes to keep this family from tearing itself apart at the seams."
Julian ignored her poisonous retort. He slowly reached into the inner pocket of his dark blue suit, pulling out his own smartphone. The screen illuminated his tense expression, displaying a live feed from the hallway's primary security camera. He didn't just watch the live action; he swiped back through the digital archives, pulling up the footage from exactly two hours prior, right when he had supposedly left for his meeting across town.
On the small glass screen, the video showed Clara standing right where she was now, but her expression on the recording was chillingly calm as she rehearsed the very lecture she had just tried to pin on the children's misbehavior. The digital timestamp proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that the entire confrontation had been premeditated to force Julian into a reactive rage.

Julian pressed the phone to his ear, listening to the automated cloud backup system replay the audio file of Clara plotting this exact setup with an unknown third party.
