Chapter 6 - The Blackout Circuit

The sudden plunge into absolute darkness was accompanied by the heavy, mechanical groan of the home’s backup generator failing to engage. In the study, the blue glow of Julian’s laptop vanished, leaving only the pale, ghostly moonlight cutting through the tall windows to illuminate the scattered papers on the mahogany desk. Julian remained perfectly still in his leather armchair, his breathing slow and measured, his senses instantly heightening as the silence of the pitch-black house pressed in around him.
He didn't reach for a flashlight. Instead, he slid his hand across the desk until his fingers brushed the cold, metallic casing of his smartphone. The battery indicator flickered briefly before stabilizing at twelve percent—enough power for emergency tactical functions, but a precarious margin in a house that had just been digitally and physically compromised.
Upstairs, a floorboard creaked softly above the study. It wasn't the tentative step of a frightened child, nor was it the rustle of silk as Clara packed her bags. It was a heavy, deliberate, military-style tread that moved with absolute precision through the pitch-black corridor toward the master bedroom.
Julian silently stood up, his tall frame moving ghost-like through the shadows. He didn't turn on the device's flashlight feature; he knew every inch of this house by heart, every creaking joist, every threshold, every shadow. He stepped out of the study and into the darkened hallway, his hand sliding along the cool, textured wallpaper until he reached the base of the grand staircase.
"Clara?" Julian called out, his voice low, controlled, and echoing softly into the cavernous vertical space of the foyer.
There was no verbal response from upstairs, but the faint glow of an infrared tactical scope briefly painted a crimson speck against the banister three steps above him. Someone else was in the house—someone who hadn't come through the front door, and someone who wasn't afraid to use force to retrieve the contents of the hidden wall safe.
Julian didn't retreat. He took two swift, silent steps up the stairs, his dark suit blending seamlessly into the charcoal shadows of the night. His mind raced through the tactical possibilities: the security server in the basement was dead, the cloud backups were encrypted, and the physical documents Clara had uncovered in the wall safe were now the ultimate target for whatever shadowy syndicate she had inadvertently entangled herself with.
A sudden, sharp crash echoed from the master suite upstairs, followed immediately by Clara’s muffled scream, cut short abruptly as if a hand had been clamped firmly over her mouth.
Julian broke into a controlled, lightning-fast sprint up the remaining stairs, his heart hammering against his ribs in a restrained rhythm of pure adrenaline. He reached the second-floor landing just as the door to the master bedroom swung violently open on its hinges, revealing a shadowy, tall figure in tactical gear stepping out into the hallway, carrying Clara’s leather suitcase in one hand and the heavy brass key in the other.

The intruder froze as the moonlight caught Julian standing squarely in the middle of the corridor, blocking the only viable escape route to the stairs.
