Chapter 8 - The Smoke and the Mirror

A thick, blinding cloud of acrid white smoke erupted instantly from the canister, filling the narrow hallway with a suffocating haze that choked the air and stung the eyes. Julian deflected the flying suitcase effortlessly with one arm, but by the time he cleared the obscuring smoke with a sweep of his jacket, the tactical operative had vanished down the opposite end of the hallway toward the service stairs.
Julian didn't pursue him blindly. He immediately turned his attention back to Clara, who was coughing violently against the doorframe of the master suite, her hands clawing desperately at the wooden molding.
"Clara, talk to me now," Julian demanded, grabbing her firmly by the shoulders and pulling her away from the toxic fumes out toward the open, smoke-free landing near the grand staircase. "What debt? What patents?"
Clara collapsed weakly onto the top step, burying her face in her hands as silent, wracking sobs shook her frame. The beige satin blouse from the afternoon was long gone, replaced by the ruined silk robe, and the proud, arrogant woman who had tried to frame him hours earlier was completely gone, replaced by a terrified person drowning in consequences she could no longer control.
"It wasn't just a corporate merger, Julian," Clara wept, her words tumbling out in a broken, desperate confession. "My father... he didn't die of a heart attack. He was working on quantum encryption algorithms for the defense department before your company bought his startup out from under him. He blamed you, Julian. He blamed you for destroying his life, and he made me promise that one day, I would infiltrate your life, dismantle your company from the inside, and take back what was rightfully his."
Julian stood frozen above her, his breath hitching in his chest. The dark suit he wore felt suddenly heavy, like a suit of armor forged entirely out of deception. Every anniversary, every quiet evening by the fireplace, every smile shared across the breakfast table—was it all part of a decade-long revenge plot orchestrated by a dead man and executed by his devoted daughter?
"And the children?" Julian asked, his voice dropping to a harsh, pained whisper that barely carried over the sound of the wind howling outside the window. "Are Leo and Maya even my children, Clara? Look me in the eye and tell me the truth."
Clara stopped crying for a fraction of a second. She lifted her tear-stained face, looking up at Julian with a terrifying, hollow expression that answered his question before she even opened her mouth to speak.

Before she could utter a single syllable, a sharp, rhythmic tapping sound echoed from the children’s bedroom down the hall—a distinct Morse code pattern that Leo had been taught during his scout troop meetings, signaling immediate, deadly peril.
