Chapter 9: The Second Front

The realization hit Julian with the force of a physical blow. He spun around on his heel, his face draining of all color as the trap snapped shut in his mind. “We’ve been played,” Julian barked sharply, his voice cutting through the silent penthouse like a razor blade. “The break-in at the garage, the digital footprint leading us straight to this empty suite—it was all an elaborate distraction to pull us away from the perimeter.”

Vance’s eyes widened as the tactical reality set in. “The safe house,” Vance said, his hand already reaching into his jacket to pull out his secure satellite comms unit. “The secondary location on the coast. Only Arthur and the three of us knew the exact coordinates.”

Julian didn't wait for Vance to finish the sentence. He sprinted back toward the service elevator doors, smashing his fist against the call button with furious desperation. “Call the tactical backup unit stationed at the marina,” Julian ordered over his shoulder, his heart pounding a frantic rhythm against his ribs. “Tell them to mobilize immediately and secure Clara and Lily before anyone else reaches the property.”

Vance tapped furiously at his satellite device, his expression turning grim as static hissed through the tiny speaker. “I’m not getting a clean handoff, boss,” Vance reported, his voice tight with rising panic. “The local relay tower is dead. Someone is jamming our comms frequencies across the entire southern sector.”

Julian felt a cold sweat break out across his neck. They were completely cut off, flying blind in the middle of a war zone engineered by a ghost from his past. The elevator doors slid open with agonizing slowness, and Julian lunged inside, pressing the button for the underground service bay where they had left the SUV. Every second wasted in this glass-and-steel cage felt like an eternity stolen from his family.

As the elevator plummeted downward through the dark belly of the Grand Meridian, Julian replayed every detail of the evening in his mind. Arthur’s confession on the laptop screen echoed in his ears. They found my family in Ohio. Viktor wasn't just playing chess; he was burning the entire board to the ground. If Clara and Lily were caught out in the open during a coordinated extraction raid, all of Julian’s wealth, power, and precautions wouldn't be worth the paper they were printed on.

The elevator hit the subterranean level with a sharp jolt, the doors parting to reveal the dim, empty concrete bay. Julian didn't hesitate for a microsecond. He broke into a dead sprint toward the idling SUV, his mind singularly focused on one desperate mission: racing back to the coast before Viktor’s executioners closed the trap for good.
