Chapter 7: The Maintenance Ascent

The utility service elevator of the Grand Meridian hotel smelled of industrial bleach, damp concrete, and old dust. Julian, Vance, and Miller stood shoulder to shoulder in the cramped metallic box as it surged upward with a low, mechanical hum that vibrated through the soles of their shoes. Julian adjusted the cuffs of his dark suit, his fingers running over the cold steel of a suppressed tactical pistol tucked neatly into his waistband. His mind was clear, every distraction stripped away by the sheer gravity of the moment.

“Forty seconds to the mechanical floor,” Miller muttered, checking the magazine of his sidearm with a soft, practiced click. “Once the doors open, we’re stepping straight into the building’s primary climate control corridor. It bypasses all guest floors and security checkpoints entirely.”

Julian nodded. “Keep your comms open on a sub-audible frequency. If Arthur has guards stationed outside the penthouse suite, I want them neutralized before they can trigger a silent alarm or wipe the mainframe servers.”

The elevator bell chimed softly, a single metallic note that cut through the low hum of the machinery. The heavy doors slid open smoothly, revealing a long, harshly lit corridor lined with insulated pipes and heavy electrical conduits. The air here was noticeably warmer and smelled faintly of ozone. They stepped out in tight tactical formation, boots making almost no sound against the rubberized floor tiles. Julian took the point, his eyes scanning every shadow, every intersecting doorway, and every overhead ventilation grate with cold, predatory focus.

They moved with practiced synchronization down the long hallway, turning sharply around a reinforced concrete corner that led directly to the private service stairwell of the penthouse level. A solitary security guard in a dark corporate suit was leaning against the heavy fire door, scrolling casually through his smartphone. Before the man could even look up, Vance moved forward with terrifying speed, clamping a heavy hand over the guard’s mouth while sweeping his legs out from under him. The man hit the floor with a dull thud, unconscious before his head even touched the rubber tiles.

Miller dragged the guard into a nearby utility closet while Vance secured the door behind them. Julian didn't break stride. He stepped up to the heavy reinforced steel door marked Penthouse 1: Private Residence, pulling a small electronic bypass device from his inner suit pocket. He plugged the decoding rig into the manual override port beside the biometric scanner. The small LED light flashed from frantic red to a steady, welcoming green within three agonizing seconds. Julian drew his suppressed pistol, gripped the handle, and slowly pushed the heavy door inward.
