Chapter 8: The Empty Throne

The private penthouse suite was vast, silent, and bathed in the ethereal blue glow of a massive floor-to-ceiling glass wall overlooking the sprawling, glittering expanse of the city skyline. Julian stepped through the threshold first, his pistol raised, sweeping the expansive living area with rapid, practiced movements. The room was impeccably decorated with modern minimalist furniture, expensive abstract art, and polished hardwood floors that reflected the ambient light of the city below. But the space was completely empty of human presence.
Vance and Miller swept the side corridors, clearing the master bedroom, the private study, and the sprawling kitchen in rapid succession. Within two minutes, Vance stepped back into the central living area, shaking his head. “Clear, boss. No guards, no personnel. Not a single living soul.”
Julian lowered his weapon slightly, his brow furrowing in deep confusion. He walked over to the mahogany executive desk sitting near the massive glass windows. Atop the polished wood sat an open laptop, its screen glowing brightly against the darkened room. Beside the laptop rested a single manila envelope with Julian’s name written across the front in neat, familiar handwriting. Arthur’s handwriting.
“It’s a trap,” Miller warned, his hand still resting on his holster as he scanned the perimeter windows. “Standard ghost setup. They lured us up here just to watch us waste valuable time.”
Julian shook his head slowly, walking toward the desk. He didn't feel the relief of an empty room; instead, a cold dread settled deep in the pit of his stomach. He reached out and picked up the manila envelope, feeling the weight of a few heavy sheets of paper inside. He flipped open the laptop screen instead. A video file was paused on the desktop, featuring a live timestamp from less than ten minutes ago.
Julian hit the spacebar. The video flickered to life, showing Arthur sitting in an unfamiliar, stark room with concrete walls, looking directly into the camera lens with hollow, terrified eyes. Arthur’s glasses were slightly crooked, and a dark bruise stained the left side of his jaw.

“Julian,” Arthur’s recorded voice echoed softly through the penthouse speakers, sounding tired and utterly broken. “If you’re watching this, it means you fell for the digital breadcrumbs and climbed all the way up to an empty room. I’m sorry. I tried to hold out, I swear I did. But they found my family in Ohio six hours ago. Viktor didn't just want the money; he wanted a reunion.”
Julian stared at the screen, the breath catching in his throat. Viktor hadn't just targeted Julian’s family as a warning; he had launched a simultaneous two-front strike against everyone Julian ever swore to protect. The game wasn't happening in this penthouse; it was happening back at the safe house they had just left behind.
