Chapter 13: The Sins of the Blood

Julian kept his pistol raised, the barrel locked firmly on Marcus’s chest, though his hands trembled slightly with a cocktail of rage and profound betrayal. The brother he thought was dead, the man whose disappearance had fractured their family a decade ago, stood casually in the wreckage of the safe house as if they were meeting for a casual chat over coffee.

“Where are Clara and Lily?” Julian demanded, his voice trembling with controlled fury. “If you’ve touched a single hair on their heads, Marcus, I swear to God I will empty this magazine into your chest right here and now.”

Marcus didn't flinch. He took one slow step forward, ignoring the threat of the weapon entirely. “Put the gun down, Julian. If I wanted them dead, they wouldn't have been left here waiting for you. Look around. Do you see blood? Do you see a massacre? No. They’re safe, resting comfortably in a secure location less than a mile down the coast.”

Julian didn't lower his weapon, but his eyes narrowed in suspicion. “Why? Why orchestrate this entire nightmare? The break-in at the garage, the digital breadcrumbs, the empty penthouse—why drag my family through hell just to bring me out into the open?”

Marcus sighed heavily, running a hand through his graying hair. He looked older, worn down by years of hiding in the dark corners of the world while Julian built an empire on the foundations of their shared past. “Because you forgot where we came from, Julian,” Marcus said quietly, his voice carrying a deep, melancholic weight. “You thought you could buy your way out of the syndicate with legitimate bank accounts and offshore shells. You thought you could wash your hands clean of the blood we spilled together to build this fortune.”

“I did it to protect them,” Julian growled fiercely. “I built a wall between our world and theirs so they would never have to look down the barrel of a gun.”

“And look where that wall got you,” Marcus countered sharply, stepping closer until the barrel of Julian’s pistol nearly touched his coat button. “A wall only keeps people trapped inside with the monster hiding in the dark. Viktor didn't come back for revenge, Julian. Viktor was just a tool I used to knock down your front door, to prove to you that as long as you wear that suit and carry those secrets, your family will never be safe.”

Julian stared at his brother, the harsh truth of the words cutting deeper than any blade. Every precaution he had taken, every fortress he had constructed, had only served to blind him to the reality that his past was an inescapable shadow.

“So what now?” Julian asked, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. “Do we finish what we started ten years ago?”

Marcus shook his head slowly, reaching into his overcoat pocket. Instead of a weapon, he pulled out a set of heavy brass keys and tossed them onto the broken floor between them. “Now, you make a real choice, Julian. You walk away from the syndicate for good, leave the money behind, and take your family across the border with nothing but the clothes on your back. Or you pick up those keys, step back into the dark, and watch them spend the rest of their lives running from ghosts.”
