Chapter 11: The Forest Ambush

The SUV bounced violently as Vance cut the steering wheel hard to the left, sliding off the paved coastal highway and plunging headfirst into the muddy, overgrown expanse of the old forest service road. Low-hanging pine branches whipped loudly against the reinforced sides of the vehicle like grasping fingers. Inside, the cabin lurched with every deep rut and jagged rock hidden beneath the standing water. Julian braced himself against the dashboard, his eyes locked on the rearview mirror.

The two tailing sedans had momentarily overshot the hidden turnoff, their brake lights flaring red through the sheets of falling rain as they fought to slow down on the slick asphalt. It bought Julian and his men precious seconds of absolute darkness.

“Kill the headlights!” Julian ordered suddenly.

Vance flicked the master light switch, plunging the SUV into absolute, pitch-black darkness. The vehicle rolled forward on momentum alone, its heavy tires whispering quietly over a thick bed of pine needles as Vance eased it off the main track and tucked it deep beneath the dense, low-hanging canopy of an ancient oak grove. The engine dropped to a quiet, muffled idle.

“Miller, take the left flank through the tree line,” Julian whispered, pulling his suppressed pistol from his waistband and chambering a round with a soft, metallic click. “Vance, stay with the vehicle and secure the comms backup box. If anyone comes down this track looking for us, make sure they don't leave to tell the story.”

“And you, boss?” Vance asked quietly, his hand resting on his own weapon.

“I’m going on foot to check the safe house perimeter,” Julian replied, his voice cold and resolute. “If Clara and Lily are already compromised, I need to know before we kick in the front door.”

Julian didn't wait for a reply. He opened the heavy SUV door just enough to slip out into the freezing downpour, pulling the hood of his dark coat low over his forehead. The forest was an impenetrable maze of shadows and dripping leaves, the smell of damp earth and rotting wood filling his lungs. He moved with silent, practiced stealth, using every trick he had learned during his years in the shadows to mask his footsteps.

As he crept closer to the coastal cliffside where the safe house sat hidden behind a high security fence, the faint amber glow of the property's emergency floodlights cut through the rain. Julian froze behind a thick cedar trunk, his heart skipping a beat. The heavy iron security gate lay twisted and broken across the gravel driveway, and the front door of the safe house stood wide open, spilling harsh yellow light out into the dark, indifferent night.
