Chapter 12: Broken Sanctuary

Julian crept forward through the wet grass, hugging the exterior stone wall of the safe house until he reached the threshold of the open front door. The interior was dead silent save for the steady patter of rain and the harsh hiss of a severed water pipe somewhere down the hall. He raised his pistol, sweeping the entryway with cold, calculating precision. The living room was completely wrecked; overturned furniture, shattered ceramic lamps, and torn upholstery littered the hardwood floor, telling a silent story of a brief, violent struggle.

He stepped inside, his boots making a soft crunching sound over broken glass. “Clara?” he called out in a low, agonizing whisper that barely carried across the wrecked room. There was no answer.

Julian moved methodically toward the back hallway leading to the private bedrooms. Every muscle in his body was coiled like a spring, ready to release lethal force at the slightest provocation. He reached the master bedroom door, which hung loosely off its single remaining hinge. He pushed it open with the barrel of his gun, stepping into the dim space.

The room was empty. But resting on the neatly made bed was a single object that made Julian’s blood run completely cold: Lily’s small dark coat, neatly folded beside a silver pocket watch that Julian hadn't seen since the day his brother Marcus vanished overseas five years ago.

A sharp footstep echoed softly from the hallway behind him.

Julian spun around on his heel, his pistol raised and leveled dead at the doorway in a split second. Standing in the shadows of the hallway was a tall figure in a dark overcoat, hands raised casually away from his body. As the overhead emergency light flickered and steadied, the man stepped forward into the dim illumination, revealing a familiar face marked by time, a weathered scar across his left cheek, and eyes that held the exact same amber intensity as Clara’s.

Marcus.

Julian lowered his weapon slightly, sheer disbelief warring with a rising tide of fury in his chest. “You,” Julian breathed out, the word tasting like ash in his mouth. “It was you all along.”

Marcus offered a sad, tired smile, lowering his hands slowly. “Hello, little brother,” Marcus said softly, his voice echoing in the hollow room. “It took you long enough to trace the ledger back to the beginning.”
