Chapter 7: A Spark in the Ashen Yard**

The next morning, the mess hall was electric with rumors. Inmates expected Arthur Vance to be carried out in a body bag. Instead, both men entered the chow hall at the 7:00 AM breakfast bell.
Kane walked ahead, his jaw clenched, ignoring his crew who gestured for him to sit at the king’s table. Without saying a word, Kane grabbed his tray—oatmeal, toast, and an orange—and walked past the gang leaders.
He stopped right in front of Arthur’s table.
The room held its breath. Guard captains reached for their stun batons. Diaz leaped up, thinking Kane was about to deliver the execution blow.
Instead, Kane set his orange onto Arthur’s tray.
"Take it," Kane said roughly, not making eye contact. "It's fresh."
