Chapter 10: Blood on the Pages**

The fight was brutal, enclosed, and desperate. Kane took a slash across his shoulder, blood soaking through his light blue shirt, but he grabbed Diaz by the collar and hurled him across the heavy oak table, splintering it in two.

The other two attackers swarmed Kane, pinning him against the metal bookshelves. A blade sank into Kane’s side. Kane groaned, falling to one knee.

"Kane!" Arthur shouted.

Arthur grabbed a heavy fire extinguisher from the wall mount, pulled the safety pin, and discharged a blinding blast of white chemical foam directly into the attackers' eyes. Coughing and blinded, the thugs stumbled backward. Kane, summoning his last ounce of raw strength, swept their legs from under them and knocked them cold against the concrete floor.

Guards finally breached the doors with riot shields and shotguns, but it was already over. Kane collapsed against the overturned book stacks, clutching his bleeding side, his breath coming in shallow, wheezing gasps.

Arthur knelt beside him, pressing a clean cotton shirt hard against the wound.
