News of what happened in the library reshaped the culture of Blackwood Penitentiary. When Kane was wheeled back into Block D two weeks later, the atmosphere had transformed. Diaz and his conspirators had been transferred to isolation, but more importantly, the endless cycle of territorial intimidation had lost its grip.
Inmates saw that Kane—the most feared brute in the facility—had put his life on the line for the oldest man in the block.
Young prisoners like Marcus began visiting the library, asking Arthur for help with high school equivalency tests and legal appeals. Kane, still recovering, sat quietly in the back corner of the library every afternoon, learning how to read full books for the first time in his adult life.
Arthur sat beside him, patiently sounding out syllables: *"R-e-d-e-m-p-t-i-o-n."*
"Redemption," Kane whispered, tracing the ink on the page with his tattooed index finger.
