Chapter 7: A Dangerous Bargain

Julian sprinted up the grand staircase, two steps at a time, ignoring the aching burn in his muscles. The sound of Clara’s scream still hung heavy in the air, mixing with the chilling memory of the Zippo lighter on the security monitor. He reached the second-floor landing and saw the heavy mahogany door of Clara’s dressing room standing wide open, spilling a harsh line of yellow light across the dark corridor.
He drew a concealed firearm from the holster beneath his suit jacket, his thumb flicking off the safety with a sharp click. Pushing the door open with his foot, he swept the barrel across the room in a practiced arc, ready for anything.
The room was empty. The hidden floor safe yawned open like an empty mouth, its metal interior reflecting the harsh overhead lights. A single sheet of paper lay abandoned on the Persian rug, fluttering slightly in the draft from the open balcony doors. Julian rushed across the room, ignoring the safe entirely, and scanned the balcony. Clara was gone. The outdoor lounge chair was overturned, and her half-full glass of whiskey lay shattered on the stone floor, dark liquid soaking into the porous marble.
"Clara!" Julian yelled, his voice echoing out into the empty night gardens.
There was no answer. Only the gentle rustling of the wind through the oak trees and the distant, rhythmic crashing of the waves against the rocky coastline far below.
Suddenly, the screen of Clara’s abandoned phone on the table lit up with an incoming text message. Julian dropped his gun back into its holster, crossed the room in two strides, and picked up the device. The screen flashed an unknown number displaying a single, chilling image: Clara, gagged and tied to a wooden chair in what looked like an abandoned industrial warehouse, with a man holding a phone to her ear.
Julian’s phone buzzed in his own pocket a second later. He pulled it out and answered immediately, pressing the device tightly against his ear.
"If you ever want to see your precious wife alive again, Vance, you’ll play by our rules," a smooth, cultured voice purred through the line. "No cops, no private security, and no corporate lawyers. Just you, the dock at sector four, and the black ledger you hid away before you skipped town."
Julian’s jaw tightened so hard a muscle ticked in his cheek. The black ledger contained the names, bank accounts, and illegal transactions of every high-ranking official and syndicate boss in the Tri-State area. If it fell into the wrong hands, thousands of lives—including his own—would be instantly destroyed.
"She has nothing to do with this," Julian growled, his voice dropping an octave into pure, unfiltered menace. "Leave her out of it. Tell me what time."
"Sunrise," the voice replied smoothly. "And bring the ledger, Julian. Or we start sending your wife back to you in pieces, starting with that pretty blonde hair."

The line went dead, leaving a harsh dial tone buzzing in Julian’s ear. He lowered the phone, his mind racing through a dozen escape plans, but none of them guaranteed Clara’s survival. As he turned to leave the dressing room, a soft, frightened gasp from the doorway stopped him in his tracks. Sarah stood there, clutching her belly, her eyes wide as she looked at the open safe and the shattered glass on the balcony.
"They're coming for us, aren't they?" Sarah whispered, her voice trembling. "They found you."
