Chapter 2: Echoes in the Empty Wing

The heavy oak door of the master suite clicked shut behind Clara with a dull, hollow sound that echoed through the silent corridors of the estate. She paced across the plush rug, her heels clicking a frantic rhythm against the hardwood. Her heart hammered against her ribs, not from grief, but from a blistering, white-hot humiliation. Julian, the man who had built this empire by her side, had chosen a penniless servant over her. He had touched Sarah with a tenderness he hadn’t shown Clara in years.
Clara walked toward her vanity table, her hands trembling as she reached for her phone. She needed answers, and she needed them immediately. She dialed Arthur, Julian’s chief financial officer and the one person who usually knew where the bodies were buried within the corporation. The phone rang three times before a groggy voice answered on the other end, complaining about the late hour.
"Arthur, listen to me very carefully," Clara said, her voice dropping into a harsh whisper that commanded immediate attention. "What do you know about Sarah, the new maid on the east wing?"
There was a sudden, sharp intake of breath on the line. The ambient noise in Arthur’s background—the rustling of papers, the distant hum of a television—vanished instantly, replaced by a heavy, uncomfortable silence. When Arthur finally spoke, his voice was tight, guarded, and laced with a sudden, palpable fear.
"Clara, you shouldn't be asking about her. Julian made it very clear that topic is strictly off-limits for everyone in the inner circle."
"I don't give a damn what Julian made clear," Clara snapped, her temper flaring anew as she gripped the phone tighter. "He just humiliated me in our own hallway for her. He touched her, Arthur. He looked at her the way he used to look at me before the company went public. Now, you are going to tell me what kind of hold that girl has over my husband, or I swear I will burn this entire foundation to the ground before the sun comes up."
May you like
Arthur let out a long, shuddering sigh that sounded like a man standing at the edge of a cliff. The hesitation in his breathing told Clara everything she needed to know; he knew something monumental, and it terrified him to his core.
"It’s not just about an affair, Clara," Arthur said, his voice dropping to a near-inaudible murmur. "If the board finds out whose child is really growing inside that girl, Julian won't just lose his company. He’ll lose his life."
