Chapter 6: The Unlocked Drawer

Clara rushed down the winding staircase, her silk robe billowing behind her like a pair of broken wings. The scream that had echoed through the mansion hadn't come from an intruder downstairs; it had come from her own dressing room. Her heart hammered against her ribs as she pushed open the heavy mahogany door, expecting to find a thief, a ransacked jewelry box, or shattered glass. Instead, the room was eerily quiet, perfectly organized, and completely undisturbed.
Except for one thing. The hidden floor safe, concealed beneath the Persian rug and protected by a biometric scanner that only she and Julian could access, stood wide open.
Clara froze in the doorway, a cold sweat breaking out across her neck. The safe contained her most guarded possessions: offshore bank accounts, encrypted flash drives containing compromising footage of key political figures, and a thick dossier detailing Julian’s criminal history before he legally changed his name and bought his way into high society. Whoever had opened it didn't break the lock; they had used her own biometric signature while she was out on the balcony.
She rushed forward, falling to her knees on the cold floor, and thrust her hand into the velvet-lined interior of the safe. Her fingers brushed against empty space. The dossier was gone. The flash drives were gone. The only thing left behind was a single, heavy envelope resting right in the middle of the empty metal box, sealed with a thick glob of black wax stamped with an unfamiliar crest.
With trembling fingers, Clara picked up the envelope. The paper was heavy, imported, and freezing cold to the touch. She peeled away the wax seal, pulled out a single sheet of embossed stationery, and read the words written in sharp, elegant calligraphy.
"Your husband is not the man you think he is, Mrs. Vance. He didn't build this empire through brilliant investments. He inherited it from the ashes of a burning building—and the bodies of the people who trusted him most. If you want to keep your lifestyle, your status, and your life, you will meet me at the old docks at sunrise. Come alone, or the next secret exposed won't be his—it will be yours."
May you like
Clara dropped the paper, her breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps. The walls of her pristine dressing room seemed to close in around her, the white molding blurring into a dizzying spin. Julian had lied to her about everything. Every dollar, every corporate merger, every sweet word whispered in the dark—it was all a facade designed to protect a monster.
Before she could stand up, a heavy hand firmly clamped down over her mouth, muffling the scream rising in her throat as a cold, steel blade pressed softly against the sensitive skin of her neck.
