Chapter 10: The Price of Freedom

Julian didn't blink. He maintained unbroken eye contact with Marcus, his posture completely relaxed despite the imminent threat to Clara’s life. Slowly, deliberately, Julian unbuttoned his suit jacket, reached inside, and pulled out a thick, leather-bound ledger bound with steel clasps. He held it up for Marcus to see, letting the morning light catch the embossed serial numbers on the cover.
"The ledger is right here, Marcus," Julian said, his voice steady and devoid of fear. "Every account, every name, every dollar is accounted for. But before I slide it across this floor, you untie Clara and let her walk out to my car."
Marcus let out a sharp, barking laugh, pressing the switchblade a fraction of an inch deeper into Clara’s neck. A fresh smear of crimson stained the white collar of her dress, and Clara’s eyes widened in terror behind the duct tape.
"You don't get to negotiate terms here, Julian!" Marcus snarled, spittle flying from his lips. "You lost your leverage the moment my men grabbed her off that balcony. Drop the book and the gun right now, or I swear to God I’ll carve her throat open before you can take another breath!"
Julian’s eyes flicked to Clara. Despite the terror freezing her features, there was something else in her gaze—a sudden, piercing realization. For the first time, she wasn't looking at him with anger or betrayal; she was looking at him with a terrifying, agonizing clarity. She finally understood the monster her husband used to be, and the lengths he was willing to go to protect his sins.
"Alright," Julian whispered, his voice dropping low. "You win."
He let his gun slip from his fingers, allowing it to hit the concrete floor with a heavy, metallic clatter. Then, with his left hand, he tossed the thick leather ledger across the wet pavement. It slid through the grime, coming to a dead stop right at the tips of Marcus’s muddy boots.
Marcus’s eyes lit up with manic triumph. He dropped his switchblade, instantly releasing Clara’s throat, and lunged forward to scoop up the ledger. It was the exact opening Julian had been waiting for.

With blinding speed, Julian dropped into a low sweep, kicking his discarded firearm up off the concrete floor and catching it cleanly in mid-air. Before Marcus could even straighten up with the book in his hands, Julian leveled the barrel directly between Marcus’s eyes.
"Game over, Marcus," Julian said coldly, his finger resting lightly on the trigger.
