Chapter 4: Shadows in the Garden

Clara stood in the pitch-black darkness of the second-floor balcony, a glass of amber whiskey clutched tightly in her hand. The night air was biting, but she barely felt the chill against her bare shoulders. Below her, the sprawling estate gardens stretched out into the moonlit abyss, a maze of manicured hedges and ancient oak trees. Through the soft glow of the west wing window, she could clearly see the silhouette of Julian standing inside Sarah’s room. She watched as he held up the small, leather-bound journal, speaking with an intensity that made her blood run cold.

For five years, Clara had played the dutiful corporate wife, attending every charity gala, smiling for every magazine cover, and swallowing her pride every time Julian’s eyes wandered. She had earned her place at the top, carving out her empire from the ashes of her own sacrifices. She had thought their bond was forged in steel, built on shared ambition and mutual survival. But seeing Julian stand in a servant’s quarters with such fierce, protective devotion shattered that illusion completely.

She lifted her phone, dialing a private number that didn’t appear in any official registry. It rang twice before a raspy, gravelly voice answered on the other end.

"I need a complete background check," Clara said, her voice devoid of emotion, sounding sharper and colder than the winter wind. "Not the sanitized version corporate security keeps on file. I want everything. Birth certificates, financial transactions, medical records, and any past associations. Dig deep into her history before she ever set foot in this city."

A low chuckle echoed through the receiver, sending an uneasy shiver down Clara’s spine.

"Digging into that girl’s past is a dangerous game, Mrs. Vance," the investigator replied, amusement dripping from his words. "There are powerful people who paid a lot of money to make sure her history stayed buried. If I start pulling those threads, the whole sweater is going to unravel."

"Let it unravel," Clara hissed, taking a slow sip of her whiskey as she stared intently at the glowing window across the courtyard. "I want to know why my husband is willing to risk everything for a nobody. Find out who she really is, and find out who fathered that child before morning, or I'll find someone else who can."

She ended the call abruptly, tossing her phone onto the outdoor lounge chair. As she turned to head back inside, a sudden flash of movement near the edge of the garden caught her eye. Down below, lurking near the wrought-iron gates of the estate, a tall figure in a dark trench coat stood motionless, staring directly up at her balcony with an intensity that felt entirely personal. Clara froze, her breath catching in her throat as the stranger slowly raised a hand and waved.
