Chapter 9: Unearthing Family Secrets

The security guards swiftly escorted Clara out through the service entrance, her desperate screams echoing down the corridor until the heavy doors sealed shut. Absolute silence returned to the library, but the air felt dense and suffocating. Julian stood motionless by the window, his back turned toward the room, his fists clenched tightly at his sides.

Elena did not move. She recognized the profound vulnerability in his rigid posture and understood that Clara’s parting barb had struck a nerve far deeper than any financial audit or public scandal ever could.

""Mr. Vance,"" Elena said gently, breaking the heavy silence. ""Would you like me to reschedule your afternoon appointments?""

Julian slowly turned around. His face was pale, his dark eyes shadowed with a storm of suppressed emotions that he had spent decades locking away. ""Cancel everything, Elena. For the rest of the day.""

""Yes, sir,"" she replied quietly, gathering her notepad. As she turned to leave, Julian’s voice stopped her.

""Wait. Do not leave yet.""

Elena turned back, her gaze steady and compassionate. She walked a few steps closer to the desk. ""If there is something I can do to help, please tell me.""

Julian walked slowly over to his massive oak desk, pulled open a locked bottom drawer, and retrieved a heavy, leather-bound journal with yellowed, frayed pages. He placed it gently on the blotter, running his fingers over the embossed initials on the cover: *H.V.*

""My father built this empire,"" Julian began, his voice unusually strained and quiet. ""Everyone in society viewed him as a visionary philanthropist. But toward the end of his life, he became a deeply troubled man. Clara somehow got her hands on rumors regarding his early business dealings—deals that involved questionable land acquisitions in the industrial district thirty years ago.""

""Rumors are not evidence, Mr. Vance,"" Elena noted calmly. ""And even if mistakes were made in the past, they do not excuse criminal acts committed in the present.""

""True,"" Julian said, looking up to meet her eyes. ""Yet Clara’s threat wasn't just about the foundation embezzlement. She was hinting that she possesses documents proving my father deliberately ruined rival businesses to consolidate our monopoly."" He opened the journal to a dog-eared page. ""And according to this journal, which I haven't dared to read fully until today... she might be right.""

Elena walked around the desk, standing beside him as he pointed to the handwritten notes. The script was frantic, detailing financial maneuvers that crossed the line from aggressive capitalism into outright extortion.

""You cannot change what your father did,"" Elena said softly, her shoulder brushing against his sleeve. ""You can only choose what you do with that truth right now.""
