Chapter 5: Uncovering the Past

For the next three days, the private antechamber hummed with the quiet, rhythmic sound of turning pages and digital keystrokes. Elena immersed herself in the financial records of the Vance Heritage Foundation, quickly discovering that Julian’s suspicions were entirely justified. Under Clara’s supervision, dozens of grassroots educational and medical grants meant for underprivileged neighborhoods had been systematically diverted to luxury arts endowments and high-society galas.
Julian frequently walked into her workspace to review her findings, often leaning over her shoulder to examine a particular invoice or bank transfer. His professional demeanor was demanding, yet remarkably fair. He never raised his voice, choosing instead to ask sharp, analytical questions that pushed Elena to dig deeper into the corporate labyrinth Clara had constructed.
On the fourth afternoon, as rain began to lash against the tall windows of the estate, Elena uncovered a particularly glaring anomaly. She spun her desk chair around just as Julian walked in from the main study holding a cup of black coffee.
""Mr. Vance, take a look at this,"" Elena said, pointing to a highlighted line item on her monitor. ""Over the past eighteen months, two hundred thousand dollars earmarked for the downtown youth literacy program was transferred directly to an offshore account registered under a shell company named Meridian Holdings.""
Julian stopped dead in his tracks, the coffee cup freezing halfway to his mouth. His jaw tightened instantly, and the temperature in the room seemed to drop several degrees. He walked slowly over to the desk, placing the cup down without taking his eyes off the screen.
""Meridian Holdings,"" Julian murmured, his voice dangerously low. ""Clara incorporated that entity shortly after her divorce settlement was finalized. She claimed it was for private investments.""
""It appears those private investments were funded entirely by charity grants intended for at-risk teenagers,"" Elena stated calmly, meeting his fierce gaze. ""The signatures on these transfer authorizations are all hers.""
Julian slammed his hand flat against the mahogany desktop, the sharp sound echoing through the quiet room. It was the first sign of raw anger Elena had seen from him since the night of the gala. Yet, unlike Clara’s explosive tantrums, Julian’s fury was cold, calculated, and terrifyingly focused.
""She used my family's name and our philanthropic mission to line her own pockets,"" Julian said, his voice shaking with restrained rage. ""Every single cent must be recovered immediately, and every board member must be notified before the end of the week.""

""I have already compiled all the transaction logs, digital receipts, and bank routing numbers into a secure encrypted folder,"" Elena said, handing him a flash drive. ""It is ready for legal counsel whenever you give the word.""
Julian looked down at the small piece of plastic in his palm, then raised his eyes to look directly at the young woman who had uncovered corruption that his entire executive team had missed for years.
