Chapter 4: A New Assignment

Elena stood in the center of her small, neat quarters on the third floor of the staff quarters, carefully folding her black maid’s dress and placing it inside a canvas garment bag. The white apron, starched and spotless, rested beside it. When Mrs. Gable had delivered the news of her promotion less than an hour ago, Elena’s initial reaction had been one of cautious skepticism. Promotions in elite households rarely happened without strings attached, and transitioning from cleaning marble floors to managing executive correspondence for Julian Vance felt like stepping into an entirely different universe.

A gentle knock sounded at her door. ""Come in,"" Elena called out, smoothing down the simple navy blue skirt she had quickly changed into.

Mrs. Gable entered, carrying a sleek leather folder and a set of polished brass keys. ""Here are your new credentials, Elena. Your desk is now located in the private antechamber directly adjacent to Mr. Vance’s main study. You will manage his daily schedule, oversee the correspondence for the Vance Heritage Foundation, and assist with confidential audits.""

Elena accepted the items, her fingers tracing the smooth leather of the folder. ""Thank you, Mrs. Gable. I appreciate your support, though I admit I am surprised Mr. Vance would trust me with such responsibilities after our brief interaction last night.""

""Mr. Vance is a complex man, Elena,"" the head housekeeper said gently, placing a hand on the younger woman's shoulder. ""He respects competence, and he despises cowardice above all else. Just be yourself, do your work with the same integrity you showed in the ballroom, and you will do fine. Now, go on. He expects you at nine sharp.""

Arriving at the heavy double doors of the private study precisely at the designated minute, Elena took a steadying breath and turned the brass handle. The room smelled of old paper, polished wood, and faint traces of sandalwood. Julian was standing by the tall arched window, looking out over the autumn gardens. He turned as the door clicked shut behind her.

""Punctual. Good,"" Julian said, walking over to his desk and gesturing toward the chair opposite him. ""Sit, Elena. Let us dispense with the formalities. We have a great deal of work to do.""

Elena sat down, opening the leather folder. ""Where would you like me to begin, Mr. Vance? Mrs. Gable mentioned auditing the foundation files.""

""Start with the community outreach grants,"" Julian said, his eyes studying her intently. ""Clara was heading that division for the past two years. I suspect we will find that her personal biases heavily influenced where those funds were directed. I need you to find every discrepancy.""
