Chapter 3: The Weight of Inheritance

The morning sun cast long, sharp shadows across the manicured lawns of the Vance estate. Inside the grand library, surrounded by thousands of leather-bound volumes that spanned centuries of philosophy and law, Julian sat behind an expansive mahogany desk. Piles of financial reports and philanthropic audits lay neatly arranged before him, yet his mind was entirely untethered from the spreadsheets. He kept replaying the events of the previous night, specifically the look of unyielding resolve in Elena’s eyes.

A soft knock interrupted his thoughts, followed by the entrance of Mrs. Gable, the head housekeeper. She carried a silver tray holding a freshly brewed cup of black coffee.

""Good morning, Mr. Vance,"" Mrs. Gable said respectfully, placing the tray on the corner of the desk. ""I trust you slept well, given the... disruptions of last night.""

Julian took a slow sip of the coffee before looking up at his trusted head housekeeper. ""How is Miss Clara handling her departure, Mrs. Gable?""

Mrs. Gable sighed, shaking her head with measured disapproval. ""She has packed her trunks, sir. Her carriage left for her city penthouse an hour ago. She was in a towering rage, demanding to know if you were truly cutting off her monthly allowance.""

""She knows the conditions of the family trust,"" Julian stated flatly. ""Physical violence and public misconduct constitute a direct breach of the charter. Her behavior last night crossed a line that cannot be ignored simply because of our family name.""

""It took great courage for Elena to intervene,"" Mrs. Gable noted, her eyes observing Julian carefully to gauge his reaction. ""The girl is hardworking, discreet, and has shown exceptional intelligence since she arrived three months ago. Many of the junior staff look up to her.""

Julian leaned back in his leather chair, tapping a fountain pen lightly against the blotter. ""She is wasted as a general maid, Mrs. Gable. People with that kind of moral clarity are exceedingly rare in this household. I want you to reassign her. Move her to the administrative wing as my personal executive assistant, effective immediately.""

Mrs. Gable blinked in genuine surprise. Such a rapid promotion was unprecedented in the Vance household. ""Are you certain, sir? The transition from domestic staff to executive duties is significant, and the other senior managers might raise questions.""

""Let them,"" Julian replied, his voice dropping into a register that brook no further argument. ""Tell Elena to report to the library at nine o'clock. We have a mountain of foundation restructuring to handle, and I prefer working with someone who isn't afraid to tell me the truth.""

""Very well, Mr. Vance. I will inform her at once.""
