Chapter 10: The Conscience of the Estate

The rain continued to beat against the tall glass windows as Julian and Elena spent hours combing through the historical financial records and personal correspondence contained in his father’s journal. Far from being an idle threat, Clara’s blackmail material was real, hidden away in a safe deposit box downtown. The documents detailed how the early Vance fortune had indeed been built upon the systematic financial ruin of several local family-owned enterprises, including a modest shipping firm owned by Arthur Sterling’s father.
Julian stopped reading, his hand trembling slightly as he stared at a specific name on a compensation waiver dated 1984. ""Arthur... Arthur’s family lost everything because of my father’s predatory acquisitions. And all these years, Arthur has worked faithfully as our chief legal counsel, knowing the truth.""
""Have you considered talking to him about it?"" Elena asked gently, her presence providing a steady anchor amidst the emotional upheaval.
""How could I face him?"" Julian muttered, running a hand through his dark hair in frustration. ""I pride myself on honor, on absolute integrity. To discover that the foundation of my entire wealth is built on the destruction of honest people... it feels like everything I stand for is a fraud.""
""Integrity isn't about inheriting a spotless past, Mr. Vance,"" Elena said, her voice carrying a quiet, unshakeable strength. ""It’s about what you choose to do when the ugly truth comes to light. You didn't commit those acts. But you have the power to make restitution right now.""
Julian looked up, staring into her eyes with a profound sense of realization. For the first time in his life, the impenetrable wall of corporate armor he wore began to crack, replaced by a genuine human vulnerability. ""Restitution... Arthur deserves every cent that was stolen from his family. We will liquidate the secondary holdings immediately to establish a compensation fund.""
Before Elena could answer, the library intercom chimed softly. Mrs. Gable’s voice came through, sounding tense. ""Mr. Vance, you have another visitor at the front gates. But it is not Clara. It is Arthur Sterling, and he has requested an urgent private meeting.""

Julian exchanged a quick, knowing glance with Elena. ""Send him straight up to the library, Mrs. Gable.""
Ten minutes later, the heavy oak doors opened to reveal the elderly attorney. Arthur looked tired, carrying a thick manila envelope under his arm. He walked slowly into the room, his eyes scanning the journal open on the desk before coming to rest on Julian’s solemn face.
