Chapter 5 - The Mortgage on the Past

The crisp white paper slid across the polished mahogany, coming to a halt directly against the base of the champagne glass. Victor’s smug grin reflected in the crystal, a distorted caricature of triumph. Julian stared at the document, his breath catching in his throat as his eyes recognized the official seal of the Vance Family Trust embossed in gold foil at the top.

“This is impossible,” Julian muttered, pulling away from his mother’s restraining grip and stepping closer to the table. He snatched the paper up, his eyes scanning the dense legal jargon with mounting horror. “The trust is tied up in probate. It legally cannot be sold or transferred without unanimous board approval. And I never signed anything!”

Victor chuckled, stepping further into the room and casually pulling out an empty chair next to the baby carrier. He didn’t sit, but he rested his hand on the back of the mahogany chair as if he already owned the furniture.

“You’re right, Julian—you never signed it,” Victor replied, his tone dripping with patronizing amusement. “Because you didn't have to. Your beloved mother signed over the controlling interest three months ago, right after your little financial scandal hit the papers. She traded your birthright to protect her precious reputation from embezzling charges.”

Julian slowly turned his head to look at Elena, his expression one of absolute betrayal. The woman who had just declared “In this house, I make the rules” stood motionless, her posture rigid, her face devoid of any defensive emotion. She didn't flinch under her son's devastated gaze.

“Is that true?” Julian whispered, the fight completely draining out of him. “You sold out our legacy just to keep the press quiet?”

Elena finally looked at her son, her eyes flashing with a cold, calculated fire.

“I protected what took four generations to build, Julian,” Elena answered, her voice steady and unapologetic. “You gambled away half the logistics firm on a reckless tech venture, and Clara tried to forge a bloodline to claim the rest. If I hadn’t restructured the assets, the state would have seized everything by sunrise.”

Clara gasped, covering her mouth with her hands as the terrible puzzle pieces clicked into place.

“You knew,” Clara whispered, staring at Elena in sheer horror. “You knew about Leo all along. You let us walk in here, let us play our hands, just so you could trap us both in one stroke.”

“I didn't know for certain until this morning,” Elena corrected smoothly. “But I suspected. A Vance never trusts blindly. And certainly not a woman who wears a cream dress to a funeral she dressed up as a birthday party.”

Victor laughed out loud, clapping his hands together twice.

“Brilliant, truly,” Victor praised, stepping closer to Elena. “A masterclass in emotional manipulation. But you missed one crucial detail, Elena. You thought you outsmarted us, but you forgot who holds the debt on the secondary properties.”

Victor reached into his coat again, pulling out a second, much thinner envelope, and laid it directly on top of the wedding-style cake, driving a corner of the envelope straight into the white frosting.
