Chapter 10 - Warrants at the Dinner Table

The heavy click of the handcuffs securing Victor’s wrists echoed sharply in the silent dining room. Victor didn't resist, his face locked in a mask of bitter, defeated fury as the two uniformed officers guided him toward the dark hallway. But before they crossed the threshold, the federal agent in the dark suit stepped forward, pulling a stack of crisp papers from his leather briefcase.
Julian stepped protectively in front of Clara, holding his hands up defensively.
“Hold on a second,” Julian said, his voice hard as steel. “Victor acted alone with his shell companies. My wife and I had nothing to do with his fraudulent wire transfers or debt manipulation schemes.”
The federal agent didn't smile. He flipped open the folder and held out the papers toward Julian and Clara.
“Mr. Vance, your name may not be on Victor’s corporate accounts, but your signature is on the probate filings that initiated the fraudulent trust contest three weeks ago,” the agent stated flatly. “And Mrs. Vance, hospital records confirm you knowingly submitted falsified genetic registry documentation to claim inheritance rights under false pretenses.”
Clara gasped, stumbling backward until the back of her knees hit the dining table. The baby carrier rocked dangerously, prompting little Leo to wail louder.
“That’s not true! I was coerced!” Clara cried out, fresh tears spilling down her cheeks as she looked frantically at Elena. “Elena, tell them! You knew about the paternity filing! You said yourself you accessed the county records this morning!”
Elena slowly folded her hands in front of her on the mahogany table, her expression as cold and impassive as marble.
“I accessed public records to verify the integrity of my estate, Clara,” Elena replied, her voice smooth and devoid of any warmth. “What you chose to file in probate court is a matter between you, the state, and federal investigators. I never endorsed fraud.”
Julian stared at his mother in sheer horror. The realization hit him with the force of a physical blow—Elena wasn't just saving her estate; she was systematically destroying everyone who had ever threatened her absolute control, using the law as her executioner’s axe.
“You invited us here tonight not for a birthday dinner,” Julian whispered, the horrifying truth crystallizing in his mind. “You invited us here so the authorities could serve us all under one roof while your property lines protected you.”
Elena tilted her head slightly, her gaze piercing.
“Family dinners should always be memorable, Julian,” Elena said softly.
The federal agent stepped closer, gesturing to the officers.
“Mr. and Mrs. Vance, please place your hands behind your back. You need to come down to the precinct for questioning regarding document falsification and conspiracy.”
Clara clutched the handle of the baby carrier with one hand, her knuckles white, as the officer reached for her wrist.

“Wait,” Clara choked out, her voice dropping to a desperate whisper. “Before you take us... look at the parchment on the table. Ask her whose name is actually on that deed.”
