Chapter 2 - The Ghost in the Family Tree

The silence that followed Elena’s declaration was heavy enough to crush bone. Julian stared at his mother, the wrapped gift boxes in his arms suddenly looking absurd, like props in a tragicomedy. Clara froze mid-step, her hand still hovering over the rim of a water glass, her breath catching in her throat as the accusation settled over the dining room like falling ash.

“That’s a lie,” Julian finally managed, his voice cracking on the final syllable. He set the packages down on an empty chair with clumsy haste, his hands trembling visibly. “Mother, you’ve always been paranoid, but this is a sick fabrication. Clara, don’t listen to her.”

Clara didn’t look at her husband. Her wide, terrified eyes were fixed entirely on the blue folder resting next to Elena’s untouched champagne glass. The color had completely drained from Clara’s face, leaving her features looking startlingly fragile beneath the cream-colored fabric of her dress.

“Clara?” Elena asked softly, her tone deceptively gentle as she flipped open the heavy cover of the document. “Why don’t you tell your husband what you filed in probate court three weeks ago? Or perhaps you forgot that public records are accessible to anyone willing to pay a filing fee.”

Clara swallowed hard, her chest rising and falling in rapid, shallow breaths. She took a half-step backward, instinctively shielding the baby carrier with her body as if bracing for a physical blow.

“It wasn't supposed to be public yet,” Clara whispered, the admission slipping out before she could stop it.

Julian whipped his head around, staring at his wife in sheer disbelief.

“What are you talking about, Clara?” Julian demanded, stepping toward her. “What did you file? Tell me you didn’t sign anything behind my back!”

“I had to,” Clara cried out, the restraint finally snapping as a tear spilled over her eyelashes. “Your mother held all the cards, Julian! You kept telling me she would come around, that she would hand over the family company shares when Leo turned one. But she never was going to! The DNA registry match was the only leverage I had left to secure our son's future!”

Elena closed the folder with a deliberate snap, her expression hardening into unyielding granite.

“Leverage,” Elena repeated, tasting the word like poison. “You thought you could blackmail a Vance with a dead man’s secret? You didn't just forge a bloodline, Clara. You brought a stranger’s child into our legacy.”

Julian looked between the two women, his world fracturing completely.

“If Leo isn't my son,” Julian whispered, his voice trembling as he looked at the baby carrier, “whose child is he?”
