Chapter 4 - An Unwelcome Guest at the Head of the Table

The rhythmic clicking of leather shoes on the marble entryway drew every eye away from the table. The dining room fell into an absolute, breathless hush as the footsteps drew closer, heavy and deliberate, bypassing the parlor entirely and heading straight for the heart of the home.
Julian straightened up, wiping his face clean of tears, his expression hardening into sudden, dangerous clarity. He looked from Clara to the doorway, realizing with sickening certainty that this entire evening had been orchestrated by forces far beyond a simple family dispute.
“You invited him here,” Julian accused Clara, his voice dropping an octave as anger finally replaced shock. “Tonight? While we’re standing here tearing each other apart?”
Clara shook her head rapidly, her eyes wide with genuine panic as she stared at the empty archway.
“I didn't! I swear to God, Julian, I didn’t know he was coming!” Clara protested, her voice rising in sheer terror. “Victor and I haven’t spoken in months. After we filed the papers, he cut ties with me!”
Elena remained perfectly calm, not even turning her head toward the approaching footsteps. She simply picked up her champagne glass, took a slow, deliberate sip of the sparkling wine, and set it back down on the linen tablecloth with a faint clink.
“Nobody arrives at a Vance dinner uninvited unless the door was left unlocked for them,” Elena remarked coldly. She cast a sideways glance at her son. “And who, pray tell, had the master key codes changed last month? Oh, right. You did, Julian, when you tried to lock me out of my own estate.”
The shadow of a tall figure fell across the threshold before the man stepped fully into the warm light of the chandelier. Victor stood in the doorway, wearing a sharp charcoal suit that looked expensive, though his smirk betrayed a desperate, predatory edge. He didn’t look like an invited guest; he looked like a vulture arriving just in time for the feast.
“Good evening, family,” Victor said smoothly, his eyes sweeping over the untouched food, the wedding cake, and the blue folder on the table. He offered a mock salute with two fingers. “I see I missed the appetizer. But it looks like we’ve finally gotten to the main course.”
Julian lunged forward, but Elena caught his arm with a grip surprisingly strong for a woman her age. She didn't let go, holding him back with a single, warning look.
“Stay where you are, Julian,” Elena ordered quietly. “Let our guest explain why he holds the mortgage to this house.”
Victor smiled wider, pulling a folded legal document from his breast pocket and tossing it carelessly onto the table.

“You thought you owned the rules, Elena,” Victor laughed softly. “Turns out, I bought them.”
