Chapter 14 - The Final Audit

The silence in the dining room was absolute, broken only by the soft, rhythmic hum of the crystal chandelier overhead and little Leo’s quiet breathing from inside the carrier. The federal agent stepped forward, taking the document from Sarah’s hand and scanning the embossed seals with wide, disbelieving eyes.
“This is a federal indictment covering every corporate asset, offshore account, and shell company registered under the Vance holding for the past thirty years,” the agent murmured, looking up at Sarah in sheer astonishment. “You’ve been building this case since you entered the academy.”
Sarah nodded once, her expression unchanging.
“When you grow up in a house where the rules are weaponized to control human lives, you learn how to rewrite the legal code,” Sarah stated, her eyes flicking toward Julian. “Father thought he was shielding his empire by dividing the shares among the men in the family, while Mother thought she could protect her throne by playing chess with everyone else’s lives. Neither of them realized the game was rigged from the very beginning.”
Julian pressed his hands against the edge of the mahogany table, his knees shaking.
“And Clara? And Leo?” Julian demanded, his voice cracking with a desperate, frantic edge as he looked at his wife and child. “Did you use them too? Was Clara’s fake paternity test part of your federal sting?”
Clara gasped, looking up from the floor where she still knelt beside the baby carrier. Her eyes darted from Sarah to Elena, terror gripping her heart.
“No,” Sarah said coldly. “Clara’s greed was entirely her own invention. We didn't need to fake her crimes; she provided them the moment she tried to sell her soul for a share of the estate.”
Clara burst into fresh, hysterical tears, burying her face in her hands.
“I just wanted security,” Clara sobbed into the quiet room. “I just wanted my son to have a future where he didn't have to bow down to this family!”
Elena stepped forward, her face a mask of cold, ancient authority. She looked down at Clara with absolute disdain.
“Security isn't something you steal, Clara. It’s something you earn through honesty,” Elena said, her voice echoing in the grand room. “And your son will have a future—far away from this house, far away from this estate, and far away from the toxic legacy of the Vance name.”
The federal agent stepped forward, placing a hand gently on Julian’s shoulder, while motioning to the other officers.
“Mr. Vance, Mrs. Vance, and Mr. Sterling. You are all required to accompany us to the federal building for formal processing,” the agent instructed, his tone professional and immovable.
As the officers moved in to escort them toward the door, Sarah reached out and picked up the blue legal folder from the table, tucking it neatly under her arm.
“Wait,” Julian whispered, looking back one last time as they reached the threshold of the dining room. “What happens to the house now?”
Sarah turned her head, offering a faint, chilling smile that mirrored her mother’s.

“In this house,” Sarah said softly, quoting the exact words Elena had spoken at the start of the evening, “there are no more rules left to break.”
