Chapter 9 - The Prison Breach

The second explosion blew out the reinforced glass windows at the end of the cellblock corridor, sending a thick plume of acrid white smoke rolling through the narrow hallways. Alarms wailed continuously, flashing emergency strobe lights that painted the concrete walls in an eerie, pulsating crimson.
Vanessa coughed violently, shielding her face with her blistered hands as the chaos outside her segregation cell escalated into full-scale pandemonium. Shouts of panic from inmates and guards echoed off the stone architecture, blending with the heavy thud of running footsteps.
Judge Turner remained remarkably calm amidst the pandemonium, pulling a heavy set of master security keys from his suit jacket pocket—keys he had quietly requisitioned from the corrupt prison warden earlier that evening. With a quick, practiced twist of his wrist, he unlocked the heavy steel latch of Vanessa’s segregation cell.
"We don't have much time," Judge Turner urged sharply, grabbing Vanessa by the arm and pulling her out into the smoky hallway. "The corporate mercenaries your father hired didn't break into this facility to rescue you, Vanessa. They came to silence you permanently before you can access that safety deposit box."
Vanessa’s eyes widened in sheer terror as the realization hit her. Her father wasn't just abandoning her to prison; he was executing a clean-up operation.
"Where are we going?" Vanessa asked, gasping for breath as she jogged behind the judge through the blinding smoke.
"The underground maintenance tunnels," Judge Turner replied, navigating the labyrinthine facility with the terrifying familiarity of someone who had spent a decade investigating its corrupt structural contracts. "It's the only way out of Ravenwood before the state police lock down the perimeter."
As they rounded the corner toward the laundry sub-basement, a pair of masked men dressed in tactical black gear emerged from the shadows, carrying suppressed automatic weapons. They moved with chilling, military precision, sweeping the hallway for targets.
Judge Turner shoved Vanessa behind a heavy steel laundry sorting bin just as the first rounds of gunfire shredded the concrete wall above their heads, sending a shower of sharp stone chips raining down over them.
"Stay down!" Judge Turner shouted, drawing a concealed sidearm from his shoulder holster—a weapon he had been authorized to carry as a federal special magistrate working undercover with the attorney general's strike force.
He fired two controlled shots down the corridor, forcing the tactical operatives to take cover behind a steel fire door. The exchange of gunfire was deafening in the confined space, the smell of cordite mixing heavily with the burning dust.
"Move! Now!" Judge Turner yelled, grabbing Vanessa’s hand and sprinting toward an open utility hatch set deep into the floor behind the industrial washing machines.

They dropped down into the dark, damp subterranean tunnels just as a heavy tactical flashbang grenade detonated behind them, bathing the hallway in a blinding white light and deafening concussive force.
