Chapter 13 - The Confrontation in the Vault

Arthur Vance stood in the entrance of the sub-level bank vault, his tailored charcoal suit completely dry and immaculate, contrasting sharply with Vanessa’s battered, rain-soaked prison jumpsuit. He wore a calm, almost paternal smile that sent a shiver straight down her spine—a smile entirely devoid of warmth or genuine affection.

"You always were resourceful, Vanessa, breaking out of a maximum-security prison and navigating half the city barefoot," Arthur said smoothly, walking slowly toward her with his hands tucked casually into his pockets. "I suppose I should be proud. After all, you inherited my persistence."

Vanessa backed away until her spine pressed firmly against the cold titanium door of the vault. Her hands shook uncontrollably, not from the physical pain of her burns, but from the terrifying realization of the trap she had walked directly into.

"You set me up," Vanessa whispered, her voice trembling with a mixture of rage and betrayal. "You framed me for the car crash, you dumped me in Ravenwood to be killed by your mercenaries, and you orchestrated this entire corporate fraud to use me as your sacrificial scapegoat."

Arthur sighed softly, shaking his head with feigned disappointment as he pulled a sleek silver flash drive from his pocket and inserted it into the vault console.

"Business is ruthless, Vanessa. Empires are not built on sentimentality," Arthur replied coldly, his blue eyes flashing with predatory ambition. "When the federal investigators closed in on our real estate cartel, I needed a diversion that would buy me forty-eight hours to transfer our remaining capital offshore and secure a new identity overseas. You were simply the most efficient variable in the equation."

He stepped up to the optical biometric scanner, sliding his own eye past the laser reader. The machine hummed softly, and the heavy titanium vault door slowly swung inward with a deep, echoing mechanical groan, revealing rows of safety deposit boxes containing millions in untraceable bearer bonds and classified corporate ledgers.

"And now," Arthur continued, reaching into the open vault and pulling out a heavy leather portfolio stuffed with false passports and flight tickets, "you’ve saved me the trouble of hunting down the final override keys. Once I lock this vault behind us, the federal asset freeze will become permanent, and your little friend Judge Turner won't have a single shred of evidence left to prove my crimes."

Arthur reached behind his jacket, drawing a small, suppressed automatic pistol from his shoulder holster and leveling the barrel directly at Vanessa’s chest.

"I'm sorry it had to end this way, my dear," Arthur murmured, his finger tightening against the trigger. "But dead witnesses don't testify."
