Chapter 10 - The Underground Escape

The subterranean maintenance tunnels stretched out into pitch blackness, lit only by the intermittent, flickering amber glow of emergency pathway lights mounted low against the damp concrete walls. The air was thick with the earthy smell of stagnant water and rust. Vanessa scrambled on her hands and knees behind Judge Turner, her designer instincts entirely replaced by a desperate, raw survival instinct.
"Keep your head down and stay close to the wall," Judge Turner instructed in a hushed, steady whisper, pausing to check his encrypted tactical radio. The device emitted a low, encrypted static hiss that indicated federal frequencies were heavily jammed.
"Who were those men back there?" Vanessa panted, clutching her bruised ribs as she tried to catch her breath in the damp air. "Are they really working for my father?"
"They belong to Vanguard Security, a private corporate mercenary firm that Arthur Vance has retained for decades to handle his... delicate domestic problems," Judge Turner explained grimly, leading her around a sharp concrete bend. "Your father knew the moment I visited you in segregation that we were closing in on his offshore holdings. He activated the contingency protocol: eliminate any witnesses and recover the biometric override key at all costs."
Vanessa stopped dead in her tracks, a wave of profound guilt washing over her despite the adrenaline pounding through her veins. "All this time... I thought I was invincible because of our name, because of our money. I treated everyone around me like disposable trash—just like my father treated me."
Judge Turner turned back, his dark eyes softening slightly in the dim amber light. He looked at the young woman standing before him—arrogant just hours ago, but now stripped down to her core humanity.
"Recognition of your flaws is the first step toward true redemption, Vanessa," Judge Turner said quietly. "Your father built an empire on the suffering of others, believing that power insulates a man from morality. But history proves that no fortress is high enough to escape the consequences of deliberate evil."
Suddenly, the heavy sound of approaching boots echoed from the main tunnel intersection far behind them. Tactical flashlights swept across the damp walls, casting long, menacing shadows toward their hiding spot behind a massive water main valve.
"They're tracking us through the thermal sensors on our body heat," Judge Turner whispered urgently, pulling a smoke grenade from his tactical belt. "We need to split up at the next junction. You take the drainage pipe leading to the municipal rail yard; I'll draw them toward the old steam boiler plant."
"No! I'm not leaving you!" Vanessa protested instantly, realizing the terrifying odds he was facing.
"You must, Vanessa," Judge Turner commanded with absolute authority. "The safety deposit box downtown requires your biometric signature. If I don't survive this night, you are the only one left who can expose the truth and bring justice to the victims your father left behind."
May you like
Before Vanessa could argue further, Judge Turner pulled the pin on the smoke grenade and tossed it down the parallel corridor, filling the subterranean passage with a dense, choking cloud of grey smoke as he charged in the opposite direction, drawing the mercenaries away.
