Chapter 3 - The Ghost of the Boardroom

Arthur Vance sat in the leather-lined executive suite of Vance Global Enterprises, swirling a finger of aged scotch while staring out the floor-to-ceiling glass windows at the glittering skyline. Below him, the city sprawled in a magnificent display of wealth and architectural dominance. Yet, his expression was dark, etched with cold calculation rather than paternal warmth. On his mahogany desk, a secure encrypted laptop blinked with a series of flashing red warning lights indicating an immediate federal asset freeze.
The private secretary stepped timidly into the office, holding a thick manila folder stamped with confidential legal seals.
"Mr. Vance, the federal district attorney’s office has officially expanded their corporate fraud investigation," the secretary reported, his voice trembling slightly. "They have seized the offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands, and they are currently subpoenaing all corporate board minutes from the past five years regarding the highway expansion project."
Arthur did not turn around from the window. He took a slow sip of his scotch, the amber liquid burning his throat. He had spent four decades building a ruthless real estate empire by stepping on anyone who got in his way, sacrificing friendships, ethics, and eventually, his own family relationships in the relentless pursuit of absolute power.
"Let them look," Arthur replied coldly, his voice devoid of any human emotion. "They will find a labyrinth of legal subsidiaries and shell companies designed specifically to insulate this enterprise from liability. Vanessa was a useful distraction, but her reckless behavior with that luxury sports car drew far too much public attention to our municipal zoning bribes."
"Sir, your daughter was just sentenced to five years in state penitentiary without the possibility of parole," the secretary reminded him cautiously. "Shouldn't we allocate emergency funds for her defense appeal?"
Arthur slowly turned around, his piercing blue eyes narrowing dangerously as he walked over to his desk. He picked up a gold-plated fountain pen and tossed it carelessly across the blotter.
"Vanessa is an adult, and she made her own bed," Arthur said dismissively, showing a chilling lack of parental concern. "Her public trial exposed vulnerabilities in our primary land acquisition strategy that the local prosecutors have been hunting for a decade. If she stays quiet and takes the fall for the corporate negligence tied to that vehicle, the board will quietly reallocate her trust fund to cover our legal liabilities."
The secretary swallowed hard, realizing just how disposable everyone was to the billionaire developer. "And if she refuses to stay quiet?"
Arthur smiled a thin, predatory smile that failed to reach his cold eyes. He opened a hidden wall safe behind his executive portrait, revealing a stack of forged land deeds and a burner phone.

"She won't have a choice," Arthur murmured, pulling out a document that proved he had secretly altered Vanessa’s legal guardianship documents years ago to maintain absolute financial control. "Because the moment she steps foot inside that maximum-security facility, she will discover that her father didn't just abandon her—he was the one who handed the prosecution the missing evidence."
