Chapter 12 - The First Municipal Trust

The grand neo-classical facade of the First Municipal Trust Building loomed like a fortress against the dark, stormy sky, its massive marble pillars gleaming under the relentless downpour. Vanessa sprinted up the broad stone steps, her bare feet splashing in the puddles as she shoved against the heavy glass revolving doors.

To her utter astonishment, the heavy security doors swung open smoothly. The federal asset seizure order had temporarily overridden the building’s private electronic locks, leaving the subterranean bank vault accessible through the emergency maintenance corridor.

She slipped inside the cavernous marble lobby, the echoing clatter of her wet footsteps shattering the eerie silence of the empty banking hall. The air inside smelled of polished wood, old paper, and expensive brass.

Navigating the sweeping marble staircase down to the sub-level vault, Vanessa finally reached the massive, circular titanium door of the safe deposit vault. The heavy combination wheel stood unlocked, waiting for the final security verification required by the master manual override system.

She stepped up to the optical biometric scanner mounted beside the vault door—a high-resolution laser iris reader designed to match the genetic markers of Arthur Vance or his direct descendants.

Vanessa placed her face directly against the rubberized optical cup, blinking as the bright crimson laser beam swept back and forth across her eyes.

“Access Denied. Biometric mismatch detected,” a synthesized robotic voice droned coldly from the console speaker.

Vanessa gasped in sheer disbelief, staring at the flashing red error light on the screen. "No, no, no! Read it again!" she pleaded aloud, pressing her face closer to the scanner.

“Access Denied. Genetic encryption override active,” the computer repeated monotonously.

Panic surged through her veins like liquid ice. Her father had anticipated even this contingency; he had altered the vault’s DNA authorization parameters remotely using his corporate administrative privileges. Without the primary override code—a numerical sequence known only to Arthur Vance and the lead corporate attorney—the vault would remain permanently sealed, locking away the evidence needed to bring him down.

Suddenly, a heavy shadow fell across the vault entrance behind her.

Vanessa spun around slowly, her breath catching in her throat as a tall, elegant figure stepped out from the shadows of the marble corridor, holding a leather briefcase and an encrypted satellite laptop.

It wasn't a mercenary. It was Arthur Vance himself.
