Chapter 5 - Shadows in the Lobby

The flickering amber light of the lobby entrance cast long, skeletal shadows across the concrete floor. Clara stood waiting by the glass doors, her green top and beige blazer looking remarkably crisp despite the late hour. She did not look like an intruder or an adversary; she looked like someone keeping a lonely vigil.

Valeria stopped dead in her tracks, her hand instinctively tightening around the strap of her white handbag where her father’s notebook lay hidden.

“What are you doing here, Clara?” Valeria asked, her voice dropping into a defensive register. “Did my father send you to finish the lecture?”

Clara stepped forward, her dark reddish hair catching the amber light as she shook her head slowly. Her expression was devoid of malice, carrying instead an unsettling weight of empathy.

“Arthur didn't send me, Valeria,” Clara said evenly, her hands resting quietly inside the pockets of her beige blazer. “I came here on my own accord. We need to talk before you make a decision that cannot be undone.”

Valeria crossed her arms over her maroon dress, narrowing her eyes. “I don't take advice from strangers who cozy up to my father.”

“I am not a stranger, Valeria,” Clara replied, her voice remaining steady and unyielding. “I’m the person who has spent the last six months listening to Arthur talk about how much he misses his daughter, even while you spent every waking hour trying to tear down his legacy out of spite.”

The words hit Valeria like a physical blow, stripping away her defensive layers piece by piece. She opened her mouth to snap back, but no sound came out.

“Your father is aging, Valeria,” Clara continued, stepping a fraction closer. “The restructuring of Mendoza Holdings isn't about power or corporate greed. It’s about securing a legacy so he can finally step down and rest. But he refuses to hand the keys to someone who treats every relationship like a battlefield.”

Valeria felt a hot tear escape, tracking a slow path down her cheek before she aggressively wiped it away with the back of her hand.

“You don't know what he did to me,” Valeria choked out, her voice cracking under the sudden weight of vulnerability. “You don't know what it’s like to grow up in a house where affection is measured in stock options.”

“I know more than you think,” Clara said softly, her eyes softening with a deep, sorrowful understanding. “My father was Arthur’s business partner twenty years ago. I watched the fallout from the inside. I know the cost of the Mendoza name.”

Valeria stared at Clara, the ground shifting beneath her feet once again. Before she could process the shocking confession, her phone buzzed loudly inside her handbag. With trembling fingers, Valeria pulled the device out and glanced at the screen. It was an incoming video call from an unknown, restricted number. Hesitantly, she swiped to answer, and the screen illuminated to reveal Julian standing inside a brightly lit hospital emergency room.
