Chapter 2 - Shattered Reflections

The revelation hung heavy in the opulent dining room, choking the breath right out of Valeria’s lungs. Her grip on her white handbag tightened so fiercely her knuckles turned ghostly white. The man in the grey suit—her ex-husband, Julian—stared at the older man in absolute, paralyzing disbelief. He looked from the silver-haired patriarch to Valeria, his mind struggling to bridge the impossible chasm of logic.
“Your… daughter?” Julian choked out, the composure he had worn like armor finally cracking down the middle. “That’s impossible. Valeria told me her family cut ties years ago. She said she was completely alone.”
The older man, Arthur Mendoza, didn't offer a sympathetic smile. His expression remained carved from granite as he reached down to pick up his leather folio from the adjacent chair.
“Valeria is fond of editing her history to fit whatever narrative secures her sympathy,” Arthur said calmly, his gaze shifting to the woman in the green blazer, who remained seated with her hands folded neatly in her lap. “Come along, Clara. This atmosphere has suddenly grown rather stale.”
Clara nodded, gathering her things with effortless grace. She offered Valeria one last, lingering look—not of triumph, but of profound, unsettling disappointment.
Valeria felt the floor tilting beneath her designer heels. She had spent the last three days orchestrating this confrontation, fully believing she was walking into a trap set by Julian and a scheming gold-digger. Instead, she had walked straight into a mirror of her own making, shattering every comforting delusion she had used to survive the painful aftermath of her divorce.
“Arthur, wait,” Valeria blurted out, her voice losing its practiced edge, cracking just enough to betray the raw panic underneath. “You can’t just walk away. Not after everything that happened between us.”
Arthur paused near the edge of the table, half-turning his head back toward his estranged daughter.
“We stopped talking years ago, Valeria, because you refused to listen to anyone except your own ambition,” Arthur said quietly, the words landing like physical blows. “And judging by the way you ambushed us tonight, you haven’t learned a single thing.”
Julian took a hesitant step toward Valeria, his hand reaching out instinctively to steady her arm.
“Valeria, what is he talking about?” Julian asked, his voice softening with genuine confusion. “Who is Arthur Mendoza?”
Valeria violently jerked her arm away from Julian’s touch, her eyes flashing with a dangerous, volatile mix of fury and tears she refused to shed. She looked past Julian, watching as her father and Clara began walking purposefully toward the private exit.
“Don’t you dare touch me, Julian,” Valeria hissed, her voice trembling. “You don't know anything about me. None of you do.”

Arthur and Clara reached the heavy mahogany doors of the restaurant, stepping out into the cool evening air without looking back once. Julian stood frozen in the center of the dining room, watching them leave while processing the wreckage of his marriage and the bizarre family dynamic he had just stumbled into. Valeria watched the empty doorway, her chest heaving as a terrifying realization began to dawn on her. Her father wasn't just walking away from a ruined dinner; he was walking away from her life permanently, and this time, the inheritance he was cutting her out of wasn't just financial.
