Chapter 1 - The Weight of Misjudgment

The upscale restaurant was bathed in the warm, amber glow of recessed ceiling lights, casting soft shadows across white linen tablecloths and crystal wine glasses.
Valeria stood near the entrance, her long dark hair cascading over the strap of her striking maroon one-shoulder dress, her white handbag clutched tightly in her hand like a shield. Beside her, the man in the grey suit adjusted his cuffs with an air of practiced detachment, his light brown hair neatly combed above a trimmed beard. They had just approached a prime corner table where an older man in a tailored dark blue suit and a woman with dark reddish hair, wearing a crisp green top and beige blazer, were quietly dining.
Valeria’s chest rose and fell with a sharp, controlled breath as she pinned her dark eyes on the woman across the table.
“Three days divorced and you already found a rich older man?” Valeria’s voice cut through the ambient jazz music, sharp and accusatory.
The woman in the green and beige blazer did not flinch. She set down her fork with deliberate slowness, maintaining a serious, composed expression as she looked directly into Valeria’s eyes.
“Careful, sir,” the woman in green said, her voice dripping with cool warning as she glanced toward the man in the grey suit. “Valeria’s very good at looking innocent.”
The man in the grey suit stepped forward, his jaw tight as he stared down the woman who had once been his wife.
“You don’t have to expose yourself like this, Valeria,” he said, his tone heavy with a mixture of pity and warning.
Before Valeria could formulate a biting retort, the older man in the dark blue suit stood up calmly. He buttoned his jacket with precise, unhurried movements, never breaking eye contact with the man in the grey suit.
“Dad, let's go,” the older man said, his voice deep and steady. “To avoid further confusion, Valeria is my daughter.”

The air in the restaurant instantly turned to ice, freezing the remaining words in Valeria’s throat.
