Chapter 12 - Unraveling the Web

The glowing projector screen displayed the damning financial trail in stark, undeniable detail. Whispers erupted around the mahogany table as board members leaned in, staring at the offshore accounts and unauthorized asset liquidations tied directly to Richard Vance’s private investment firm. Richard’s face flushed a deep, mottled red, his posture collapsing as the absolute reality of his defeat settled in.
“This... this is fabricated!” Richard stammered, standing up abruptly and knocking his chair backward onto the carpeted floor. “You hacked my private records! This violates corporate privacy laws!”
Arthur didn't blink. He rested his hands lightly on the polished wooden table, his gaze as cold and sharp as winter ice.
“Privacy laws protect legitimate business transactions, Richard, not corporate treason,” Arthur said quietly, his voice cutting through the panic in the room. “For three years, you’ve been bleeding Mendoza Holdings from the inside, hoping I wouldn't notice before my retirement. But I saw every penny. I let you dig your own grave so that when the time came, you wouldn't just be fired—you’d be indicted.”
Clara slid a thick legal folder across the table toward the lead corporate attorney. “Federal securities fraud, insider trading, and conspiracy to commit corporate sabotage. The federal prosecutor’s office has already reviewed the files. US Marshals are waiting in the lobby, Richard.”
Two corporate security guards stepped silently into the boardroom, flanked by men in dark federal suits. Richard realized the game was entirely over. He grabbed his briefcase with trembling hands, glared venomously at Valeria, and stormed toward the exit, escorted tightly by the federal agents as the heavy oak doors slammed shut behind him.
Silence settled over the boardroom once again, heavy and profound. The threat had been neutralized, the empire secured. But as the adrenaline drained from the room, the personal reckoning remained.
Arthur slowly turned his head to look at Valeria, who stood beside him, her hands resting calmly on the back of the chair. The tension that had defined their relationship for over a decade hung in the air, waiting to be resolved.
“You handled yourself well today, Valeria,” Arthur said softly, his voice carrying a rare, raw vulnerability. “Better than I would have expected.”
Valeria looked down at her father, feeling a knot loosen in her chest that had been tied since childhood. “I learned from the best, Dad. Even if I spent half my life trying to prove I didn't need to.”
Arthur offered a faint, tired smile, his eyes softening. “I never wanted you to be like me, Valeria. I just wanted you to be strong enough to survive the world when I wasn't there to protect you anymore.”
Julian walked up quietly from the back of the room, stopping a few feet away from the table. He looked at both of them, his expression a mix of respect and hesitation.
“Mr. Mendoza,” Julian said respectfully. “I know my presence here is... complicated, given everything that happened with the divorce. But I wanted to say I’m glad you’re recovering.”
Arthur looked at Julian, then back to Valeria, a knowing look passing through his tired eyes. “The divorce papers were never finalized, Julian. The court filing was stalled pending mediation. My lawyers made sure of that.”

Julian and Valeria both gasped, staring at Arthur in utter shock.
