Chapter 5

The executive boardroom of Sterling Corporation on the thirty-second floor of downtown Chicago was designed to intimidate. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows offered a panoramic view of a skyline shrouded in autumn fog, while a massive mahogany table dominated the center of the room. Julian sat at the head of the table, his tie loosened slightly, surrounded by four senior board members whose expressions ranged from mild annoyance to outright panic. The morning news cycle was already running headlines speculating about the dramatic police presence at the Sterling estate.
"This is an unmitigated disaster for our stock value," snapped Arthur Pendelton, the senior partner with over forty years at the firm. "The morning bell rang down three point five percent, Julian! And the media is asking uncomfortable questions about your wife’s mysterious hospital admission and your mother’s conspicuous absence from the office today." Julian forced a calm demeanor, leaning forward and resting his palms flat on the polished wood. "The media loves a sensational headline, Arthur. It has zero bearing on our quarterly fundamentals."
The heavy double doors swung open without warning. Eleanor Sterling walked in, leaning heavily on an ebony cane, her black lace top replaced by a severe grey wool blazer. Despite her sixty years, her posture remained unyielding. She took a seat at the opposite end of the table, commanding the room without a single word. "Stop grandstanding, Julian," Eleanor said, her voice cutting sharply through the tension. "Arthur is right. The police didn't just respond to a domestic disturbance. Detective Reese has obtained a federal subpoena for our corporate financial archives."

A collective murmur rippled through the board members. One of them dropped his pen, the metallic clatter echoing loudly in the quiet room. Julian’s face drained of color. "That’s impossible. The encrypted drives are locked behind three layers of proprietary firewalls." Eleanor shot her son a look of profound disappointment. "Firewalls mean nothing when someone on the inside holds the master decryption keys, Julian. And it appears our dear, sweet Clara was far more competent than you ever gave her credit for."
Before Julian could respond, the boardroom’s smart monitor flickered to life automatically. The corporate logo vanished, replaced by a live video stream from a secure terminal at the downtown precinct. Detective Reese appeared on the screen, flanked by two federal agents in uniform. Julian leaped to his feet, his chair scraping violently against the floor. "Turn that off! You have no jurisdiction to broadcast into a private corporate session!" Reese looked directly into the camera lens, his expression utterly impassive. "Mr. Sterling, consider this an invitation to join us downstairs. We have some very interesting family matters to discuss."
