Chapter 13

Two weeks after the sentencing, the grand Sterling estate stood entirely silent, stripped of its opulence and guarded by federal marshals awaiting the final auction of its contents. The white marble staircase, once the stage for panic and calculated deceit, now caught the cold afternoon sunlight in quiet indifference. Inside the master study, Detective Reese stood packing up the final digital storage units into a secure metal case, while Clara walked slowly through the room, her hand trailing along the polished mahogany shelving.
"The federal receivership will auction off the property by next month," Reese said, closing the metal case with a soft click. "The proceeds will be channeled back into a restitution fund for all the small businesses your father's firm represented before its collapse." Clara stopped in front of the large gothic window, looking out over the sprawling, manicured gardens where autumn leaves swirled in the wind. "My father didn't want charity, Detective. He wanted accountability. And today, the ledger is finally balanced."
Reese walked over, standing beside her in silence for a long moment. "What will you do now, Clara? The city is full of memories here, both good and devastating." Clara turned her head, offering a warm, genuine smile that reached her eyes for the first time in months. "I’m going to rebuild my father’s forensic accounting practice. Not in a massive glass tower, but in the old brick office on the north side. A place built on solid foundations, where the truth doesn't need to hide behind marble staircases."

Reese nodded slowly, a rare smile touching his face. "If you ever need an investigator who knows his way around corporate fraud, you have my card." Clara chuckled softly, slipping her black smartphone into her coat pocket. "I’ll keep that in mind, Detective. Though I hope my future investigations involve fewer dramatic falls and considerably more coffee." They walked out of the study together, descending the grand staircase side by side, leaving the empty, echoing halls behind them for good.
The heavy front door closed behind them with a solid, reassuring thud, cutting off the view of the foyer. As they walked down the stone pathway toward the waiting car, Clara paused for a brief second to look back at the imposing stone facade of the estate. The glass windows reflected the bright, clear blue of the afternoon sky, no longer holding dark secrets or shadowed threats, but simply mirroring the unfiltered light of a brand-new day.
