Chapter 4

The private recovery room on the fourth floor of St. Jude was bathed in the pale, sterile glow of nighttime city lights. Clara sat propped up against a stack of pillows, the grey cardigan draped over her shoulders like a protective shawl. A nurse had just finished checking her intravenous drip and departed, leaving the room in a heavy, contemplative silence. The door clicked softly as it closed, and a moment later, a familiar shadow fell across the threshold. Detective Reese stepped inside, holding a thick manila folder and a steaming cup of black coffee.

"The doctor says you and the baby are remarkably unharmed," Reese said, pulling a molded plastic chair up to the bedside. "Though he strongly advised against any future acrobatic performances down marble staircases." Clara offered a dry, humorless smile, taking the paper cup Reese offered to warm her hands. "Desperate times require architecture-based interventions. Did Julian's legal team make contact yet?" Reese opened the folder, revealing a stack of printed corporate transcripts and bank routing numbers.

"They tried. Three separate high-priced attorneys called my precinct within twenty minutes of your arrival," Reese replied, flipping a page. "They’re pushing the narrative that you slipped during a domestic dispute brought on by your own emotional instability. Evelyn has already given a tearful, off-the-record interview to a local tabloid reporter claiming you were unstable." Clara let out a soft breath, watching the steam rise from her coffee. "Let them dig their trench deeper. Every lie they tell publicly is another perjury charge waiting to be unsealed."

Reese leaned forward, his expression turning serious. "There’s something else, Clara. We pulled the high-definition footage from the cloud server backup you triggered. Not just the foyer camera, but the hallway lenses outside Julian’s private study. We found footage from three nights ago. Eleanor Sterling wasn't just standing by; she was the one who authorized the transfer of your trust fund into an offshore shell company bearing Julian's initials." Clara’s grip on the paper cup tightened, a cold fury flashing in her dark eyes.

"Eleanor orchestrated my father’s professional ruin twenty years ago," Clara whispered, the words carrying the weight of a lifelong vendetta. "She thought she had buried the past when my father passed away penniless. She didn't know he left behind a meticulous digital ledger mapping every bribe, every falsified audit, and every illegal acquisition the Sterling Corporation ever made. I didn't marry Julian for his money, Detective. I married him to reclaim the keys to the kingdom."
