Chapter 2

The flashing crimson and azure lights painted erratic geometric patterns across the soaring white walls of the Sterling foyer. Paramedics moved with practiced urgency, kneeling beside Clara with oxygen masks and medical collars, their efficient movements masking the raw tension in the room. Clara kept her breathing shallow, letting out a soft groan of feigned pain as a soft collar was secured around her neck. She caught the fleeting reflection of her own face in the polished metal of a medical kit—pale, determined, and utterly unyielding.

Detective Marcus Reese stepped through the open doorway, his trench coat damp from the evening mist. Reese was a man who had seen every variety of human deceit, his sharp eyes missing nothing. He bypassed the frantic paramedics and walked straight to the base of the stairs, crouching down beside the discarded black smartphone. Without touching it, he read the active recording icon glowing faintly on the screen. A slow, knowing smile touched the corner of his mouth. He stood up and surveyed the sprawling staircase, noting the exact distance of the fall and the stark geometry of the modern security system overhead.

Evelyn hurried down the stairs, her red dress rustling loudly in the tense atmosphere. She rushed toward Reese, her voice trembling with rehearsed hysteria. "Detective, you have to understand. It was an accident! She tripped, she came at me, I barely touched her!" Reese raised a single hand, stopping Evelyn in her tracks. His voice was calm, steady, and devoid of judgment, which unnerved her far more than anger would have. "Save the statement for the interrogation room, Mrs. Vance. Right now, the house is a crime scene, and everyone stays put."

Julian reached the bottom of the landing, stepping smoothly between his wife and the detective. He extended a hand with practiced corporate charm, though Reese ignored it. "Detective Reese, I am Julian Sterling. My family is deeply shaken by this unfortunate incident. My wife is innocent; my wife was merely trying to calm a hysterical woman." Julian’s voice was rich with authority, the tone he used to close million-dollar acquisitions. Yet, Reese heard the subtle tremor beneath the polished delivery.

Eleanor remained at the top of the stairs, a silent sentinel wrapped in black lace. She watched her son and her daughter-in-law attempt to manage the police like board members during a hostile takeover. She knew the truth of what lived within these walls—the financial ruin masquerading as empire, the quiet desperation, and the cold war fought across mahogany tables. As the paramedics lifted Clara onto a gurney, the pregnant woman locked eyes with Eleanor for one brief second, a silent communication passing between them that promised complete devastation.
