Chapter 3

The interior of the ambulance smelled of antiseptic, cold metal, and stale coffee. Clara lay securely strapped to the stretcher, the gentle sway of the vehicle masking the tension in her muscles. The lone paramedic in the back was busy checking monitor readouts, entirely unaware that his patient’s vital signs were elevated not from physical trauma, but from adrenaline. Clara kept her eyes half-closed, clutching her stomach with a protective instinct that was both a biological reality and a strategic performance.

In the front cab, Detective Reese rode shotgun, having opted out of the Sterling patrol car to speak directly with the driver and review initial dispatch logs. He turned his head slightly toward the partition, his voice carrying clearly into the back. "How are you holding up back there, Mrs. Sterling? Or should I call you Miss Vance?" Clara shifted slightly, wincing for effect before speaking in a low, steady whisper. "My name is Clara. And the physical pain is nothing compared to the truth about to come out, Detective."

Reese leaned back against his seat, his gaze fixed on the road ahead through the rain-streaked windshield. "You staged a very dangerous fall, Clara. Throwing yourself down a marble staircase is a high-stakes gamble. What if the angle had been off? What if you lost the baby for real?" Clara’s expression hardened instantly, the vulnerability dropping away to reveal a razor-sharp intellect. "I knew the physics of the drop, Detective. And more importantly, I knew Evelyn and Julian would react exactly the way they did. Fear makes people predictable. Greed makes them sloppy."

"You sent me an audio file just before the paramedics arrived," Reese noted, his tone devoid of surprise. "A complete archive of financial statements, offshore accounts, and a rather damning conversation between Julian and his mother about liquidating your personal trust fund." Clara nodded slowly, her hand resting over her abdomen. "They thought I was just a naive artist from a working-class background who wandered into their dynasty. They didn’t realize my father spent thirty years auditing forensic accounts before the Sterling family ruined his firm."

The ambulance turned sharply into the emergency bay of St. Jude Memorial Hospital, the red sirens bouncing off the concrete pillars. As the rear doors swung open, revealing the glaring fluorescent lights of the trauma ward, Clara prepared her next move. She knew Julian’s lawyers were already mobilizing, and Evelyn was likely destroying whatever physical evidence remained in the master bedroom. But digital evidence lived forever, and the files resting safely on Reese’s secure server were already multiplying across multiple cloud nodes.
