Chapter 6 - The Phantom Passenger

The black town car sped through the dense, fog-draped pine forests bordering the Sterling estate, its tires hissing against the damp asphalt. Inside the vehicle, the atmosphere was thick with a tense, oppressive silence. Little Valentina had finally fallen asleep against Marisa’s shoulder, her small chest rising and falling rhythmically, though her tiny fingers remained tightly clenched around the ear of her gray stuffed rabbit.

Marisa stared straight ahead, watching the illuminated dashboard cast a faint amber glow over Julian’s profile. He sat motionless, his hands folded neatly over the handle of a heavy leather briefcase resting between his feet. He looked like a man carved from granite, completely unbothered by the fact that his wedding day had imploded into an international espionage-level crisis.

“Where are we actually going, Mr. Sterling?” Marisa finally broke the silence, her voice trembling slightly despite her best efforts to sound composed. “The private airfield is standard procedure for your business trips, but Clara won't just sit on that balcony and watch us leave.”

Julian turned his head slowly, his dark eyes meeting Marisa’s weary gaze. The streetlamps outside flickered past, casting intermittent shadows across his face.

“Clara is currently reading a document I left in my study,” Julian replied, his voice entirely devoid of warmth. “By the time she realizes the financial leverage she thought she had over me is entirely fictional, we will already be airborne.”

“And after that?” Marisa pressed, tightening her grip on sleeping Valentina. “You can’t just run from the Sterling family forever. They control the board, the banks, and half the judiciary in this country.”

Julian did not answer immediately. He reached down, unlatched the heavy leather briefcase, and pulled out a thick manila folder stamped with a stark red classification mark. He tossed it onto the seat between them. Marisa glanced down, her breath catching in her throat as she glimpsed the title page. It wasn't a corporate merger or a divorce filing. It was an adoption dossier bearing a government seal from a country across the ocean, dated six years ago—the exact week Valentina was born.

Before Marisa could read further, the town car lurched violently, tires screeching as the driver slammed on the brakes. The vehicle skidded across the wet asphalt, coming to an abrupt, jarring halt in the middle of a desolate, tree-lined crossroads.

Marisa threw her arms over Valentina to shield her from the impact. “What is happening? Did Clara’s men catch up to us?”

The driver did not answer. Instead, the front doors of the car swung open, and two men in dark suits climbed into the front seats, their faces obscured by the darkness. Before Julian could reach for the briefcase, a cold piece of polished steel pressed softly against the back of his neck.

From the passenger seat, a raspy, unfamiliar voice broke the silence, cutting through the thick fog like a razor blade.

“Drop the bag, Julian. The girl stays with us.”
