Chapter 12 - Descent Into Chaos

The private jet shuddered violently as the military-grade jamming frequencies shredded their onboard navigation systems. Alarms blared shrilly throughout the cabin, flashing red emergency lights casting strobing shadows over the panicked faces inside.
Marisa screamed softly, wrapping her entire body around Valentina to shield the sleeping child from the violent shaking. Little Valentina woke up instantly with a startled cry, clutching her gray stuffed rabbit and burying her face in Marisa’s apron.
“Hold onto her!” Julian shouted over the deafening roar of the failing turbines. He surged toward the cockpit, shoulder-checking the door as the federal agent tried to maintain control of a handcuffed Miller, who was laughing maniacally amidst the chaos.
“You’re flying right into a trap, Julian!” Miller yelled over the blaring alarms, his voice dripping with sadistic glee. “The airspace over the Swiss Alps is controlled by the syndicate! You’ll never touch down alive!”
Julian ignored the mercenary, bursting into the cockpit. The pilot was frantically fighting the yoke as warning lights blinked like a Christmas tree. The radar screen flickered erratically, displaying multiple hostile red dots closing in on their tail from all directions.
“We’re losing altitude fast, sir!” the pilot yelled, his face slick with sweat. “They’ve locked onto our transponder! We have to punch out or make an emergency landing in the mountains!”
Julian’s mind worked with terrifying speed. He scanned the topographical map glowing on the auxiliary display. There was an abandoned military airstrip carved into a remote valley in the Swiss Alps, just twenty miles from the Geneva safehouse. It was a suicidal landing spot in a severe storm, but it was their only option.
“Take us down in the valley,” Julian commanded, his voice unwavering. “Manual control. Now.”
The pilot gritted his teeth, pulling back hard on the yoke as the jet banked steeply, plunging straight down through the thick, swirling clouds toward the jagged peaks below. The G-force pressed heavily against everyone in the cabin, pinning Marisa to her seat as she squeezed her eyes shut and prayed aloud.
With a thunderous roar, the jet broke through the cloud cover. Below them, a desolate, snow-swept runway appeared briefly between the towering pines and jagged cliffs. The landing gear lowered with a mechanical thud, locking into place just as the starboard engine caught fire, spewing a trail of black smoke into the freezing night air.
The impact when they hit the runway was catastrophic. Tires blew out instantly, screeching against the frozen tarmac as the aircraft hydroplaned wildly toward the perimeter fence. Sparks showered against the windows like fireworks.
Inside the main cabin, overhead bins snapped open, sending luggage crashing down. Julian braced himself against the bulkhead, his eyes fixed on Valentina and Marisa. With a final, earsplitting crunch of tearing metal, the jet slammed into a snowdrift at the end of the runway and came to a dead stop.
Silence descended instantly, broken only by the crackle of flames licking the starboard wing. Julian kicked the emergency exit hatch open, letting in a blast of freezing alpine air and swirling snow. He turned back, reached out his hand to Marisa, and yelled over the wind.
