Chapter 13 - Footprints in the Snow

The biting alpine wind rushed into the smoking cabin, carrying the scent of burning jet fuel and crisp pine. Marisa scrambled out of her seat, clutching a terrified Valentina tightly against her chest. The little girl was sobbing softly now, her small fingers gripping her gray stuffed rabbit so hard her knuckles were white.
Julian helped them through the blown emergency exit hatch, lowering them down onto the deep, untouched snow of the abandoned runway. The federal agent followed closely behind, dragging a cursing Miller through the snowbank into the freezing darkness.
“Move toward the tree line!” Julian ordered, his breath pluming in the sub-zero air as he scanned the surrounding forest. The burning private jet illuminated the snowy clearing behind them with an orange glow, making them an easy target for any hostile spotters lingering in the peaks.
They trudged through the knee-deep snow, Marisa struggling under Valentina’s weight, her practical maid shoes soaked and freezing. Julian took the lead, carving a path through the drifts, his eyes darting between the dense evergreens and the rugged mountain ridge looming overhead.
After ten agonizing minutes of hiking through the blinding blizzard, they reached the rusted iron gates of a secluded, dilapidated hunting lodge nestled deep within the valley. This was the safehouse.
Julian pushed the heavy wooden door open. It creaked loudly, revealing a dimly lit interior warmed by a stone fireplace that crackled with a lively fire. The room was sparse—a wooden table, a few leather chairs, and a heavy iron staircase leading down to a subterranean bunker. But there was no sign of life.
Marisa hurried over to the fireplace, setting Valentina down on a thick woolen rug to warm her freezing hands. “Mr. Sterling... where is she? Where is Elena?”
Julian didn’t answer. He walked slowly across the wooden floorboards, his footsteps echoing in the quiet lodge. He approached the heavy iron staircase leading to the bunker below, noticing that the padlock had been recently cut, leaving fresh metal shavings scattered on the step.
Suddenly, a soft click echoed from the top of the stairs. Julian stopped dead in his tracks.
A figure stepped out from the shadows of the upper loft, draped in a dark tactical cloak. The hood fell back to reveal a woman with long brown hair, piercing eyes, and a striking facial structure that was an exact, undeniable match to the woman in the photograph—and a mirror image of Clara Sterling.
It was Elena.
She wasn't a ghost. She was alive, breathing, and holding a customized sidearm aimed directly at Julian’s chest.
“You took your time getting here, Julian,” Elena said, her voice a calm, melodic whisper that cut through the crackling fire. “I was beginning to think Clara’s wedding champagne had made you soft.”
Julian stood his ground, lowering his hands slowly, his expression softening with a wave of raw emotion he had concealed for six long years. “I brought our daughter, Elena. Just like I promised.”

Elena lowered her weapon by a fraction of an inch, her eyes shifting past Julian to look at little Valentina sitting by the fire. But before anyone could take another step, a loud crash echoed from the front entrance of the lodge, freezing everyone in place.
